Ok, I’m a movie junkie, I love to rent movies but I hate to waste my time on pure junk too.
Anyone want to write down some favorite movies that are worth renting and of course let me know if you’ve seen some real junk and then I can avoid wasting my bucks on that. Thanks

I’ll start, I rented Wedding date last week, it was cute, it stars Debra Messing and Dillion McDermot, it was not for children or anything, P.G. 13, my husband and I enjoyed it though and it was worth the money spent.

I rented Crash yesterday, rated R and quite a few big names, Sandra Bullock, Brendan Fraiser, Don Cheadle, Ryan Phillipe just to name a few, it was depressing, depressing and violent, lots of swear words and kind of went a few too many directions, I felt, just sad when it was over, of course, there were the moments of truth in it and that is why I felt sad.

Ok, those are my 2 cents, feel free to join in, I’ll read it 😃

I loved Crash, mostly for the scenes that we’ve all seen at one time or another. 😦 True to life in many places. 😦

Hmmm, good movies… Hotel Rwanda was excellent, but definitely not a pick me up movie. Very sad.

Second Hand Lions was a good movie. Good movie for kids.

For suspense, A Murder of Crows was good. Not for children, though.

Some of our favorites:

Holes (for the whole family)

Joan of Arc

The Quiet Man (old John Wayne movie)

The Princess Bride (oldie but goodie)

Frequency (good for 12 and up)

oh, I love frequency and also Angel eyes, I really like Jim Cavizel.

The Maldonado Miracle was very good. Totally Pro-Catholic. (The Main Characters included 2 Priests) Rated PG but OK for school age children IMO.

the house of flying daggers, assault on precint 13th,cold mountain, the pianist.

I really enjoyed the pianist and also shindler’s list, they were very difficult to watch but it gave me a small understanding of what the holocaust was like, I know, I can never fully grasp that but these movies made me really think how dangerous a dictator like hitler can be, the acting was amazing and very believeable as was in the Passion, I was so able to believe that movie, very easy to get swept up in the moment and feel like you are living it with the movie.

I like movies that are a little out of the ordinary.
Loved “Sliding Doors” with Gwenyth Paltrow
liked “Eternal Sunshine of a spotless mind” “The Big Labowski” “The Matrix”(the first one but none of the sequels)
“Napolean Dynomite” was so dumb it was funny, so if you are looking to grow intelectually, don’t bother. I was a core member at Life teen for a couple of years and that guy had the awkward teenage boy act down pat! “Sleepless in Seattle” and “An Affair to Remember” are two I could watch over and over. “The Quiet Man” I love-- We watch it every St. Pat’s Day. “Tommy Boy”

I love movies…I’ll think of more later

Spanglish with Adam Sandler was a great movie. The ending was pleasantly surprising. For those who love Jim Caviezel movies Pay It Forward was pretty good too.

My eldest son bought me Phantom of the Opera and was surprised to find that he liked it as well.

If you can get hold of some old re-releases on DVD, there are some oldies but goodies, I especially like Cary Grant in Arsenic and Old Lace and my teenage daughters loved John Wayne & Maureen O’Hara in McClintock.

My daughter just turned 12 in August, she asked for the Phantom of the Opera movie for her birthday, I was pleasantly surprised, I had rented it one time for her and she loved it, she loved the music and I hoped she would, I love the music from it also but I like Michael Crawfor (the origianl Phantom) better, his voice is so amazing I just get goose bumps.

Another fun one is hairspray with Riki Lake, I actually like it, its so silly but I just love the dancing, I dance along and my daughter just laughs at me like crazy.

I like Tommy boy and black sheep, it is so sad Chris Farley had to die, he and David Spade were so funny together.

Dumb and Dumber is also a classic and my husband likes dazed and confused 🙂

For oldies but goodies I just love Yours, Mine and Ours with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda, I bought that on dvd and all my kids like that too, I think it is funny and teaches some value too to learning to get along and thats a plus for my kids, I hear they are making a remake? I hope it is good.

I like Tammy and the Bachelor with Lesley Neilson and Debbie Reynolds and Fathers little dividend with Elizabeth Taylor and Spenser Tracy, and Giant with Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean.

I saw 'Finding Neverland" not long ago. It was great but have your tissues nearby :crying: Also ‘Napolean Dynamite’ is really…odd but really funny at the same time. ‘Hitch’ with Will Smith was really cute.

As for old movies, I’ve always loved ‘Father of the Bride’ with Elizabeth Taylor, of course ‘Gone with the Wind’ (my favorite movie 🙂 ) , and there’s a really old one from like the 30’s, I don’t know if you could find it, with Clark Gable, called ‘It Happened One Night’…basically a really old (but still funny) romantic comedy.

I’m on line with both of these.

For comedy Airplane, Caddyshack, and Meet the Parents/Meet the Fockers

Good inspiration: Remember the Titans, Mr Holland’s Opus, Dead Poets Society, and Pay it Forward (noted above)

GREAT MOVIE!! 😃 One of my personnal favorites.

Lets see,

Lord of The Rings I, II, and II (some are kinda violent, but there not that bad)

Matrix 1, the second and third were OK. (watch out for the second matrix, there’s a scene in there that you’ll probably want to skip if you have little ones)

The Incredibles (Awesome family movie)

Signs, w/ Mel Gibson if your kinda like suspense

The Passion (of course)

If you like comedy get some of the old road to’s w/ Bing Crosby and Bob Hope.

Thats all I can think of.

I give them three thumbs up! 👍 👍👍

I had forgotten that one; you’re right it is great. Which also brings to mind two others by the same director: Sixth Sense, and The Village.

Also, in the morality play category: Chocolat.

I rented Napoleon Dynamite after reading the recommendation here. What a laugh! Srange but funny.

Another good movie is The Abduction Club which gives a bit of history as well as entertainment. Even my husband enjoyed it.

Just thought of a few more…
About Schmidt --(liked it, very different from the usual)
About a boy --(one of those 6 different story lines that come together at the end-movies)
Big Fish --(grab tissues)

I hope I don’t get any flak on this selection:

“The Notebook”

It may not be appropriate for the teen set and younger, but my heart melted after watching that movie! :crying:
