I watched the Good Omens on Amazon Prime over the last couple of weeks. I was curious if any of you guys have seen it. I know it has been criticized for being sacrilegious and for having a female voice for God, but I found it, overall very funny and rather well done. The only part I found somewhat offensive to Christianity was the depiction of the Cruxifiction. Now, I am certainly not claiming it is theologically sound, it obviously is not. But I enjoyed it. It had some very good humor and did nto seem to be made with the intent of disparaging Christian beliefs, just with putting a funny spin on it all.
For those who don’t know, it is time for the anti-Christ to appear and the Armegeddon to occur. An angel who has been on earth since the Garden of Eden (he lent his flaming sword to Adam to defend himself against wild animals) and a demon who likewise has been here since the Fall (he was the demon who tempted Adam and Eve) team up to try to prevent the end of the world, as they have gotten to really enjoy their time on Earth.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen it and do they find it acceptable or do they find it as another Hollywood disparagement of our religion?

Hello Tafan2, I did see most of it and I didn’t think it was intended to disparage anyone but to be a tongue-in-cheek treatment of how the Apocalypse might play out. The source material was a book also titled ‘Good Omens’ by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman which has that characteristically sardonic British wit that you find a better version of in ‘The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy’; I thought it worked better as a book than as a television mini-series. Overall grade: B- or C+

The default moral philosophy of the story is Manichean dualism, in which there’s no real difference between the two ‘sides’ (except one is a bit more ruthless and perhaps obtuse than the other).

I watched it when it first came on, and I had read the book years ago. I loved it, loved the humor. But then, I’m much more easily offended by things that happen in real life than by movies & books.

I should have mentioned the manichean overtone of the series. That was actually it used as the basis the humor.

I love Michael Sheen and David Tennant and could pretty much happily watch either of them reading from the phone book.

It struck me as a bit like ‘Life of Brian’, a very out-there spin on traditional religious narratives not intended to be taken seriously.

Right. The tone is very light and inconsequential, suggesting that the authors don’t actually believe that there are angels and demons out in the world combating each other for the souls of humans. What motivates the two main characters is their mutual desire to keep enjoying the pleasures of life on earth - which is simple hedonism.
