Can anyone point me to a good book on/by ECFs? Something that is easy to read and understand?

I’d like to start reading on Church history, but the things I’ve glanced at seem pretty heavy to read/grasp.🤓

Thanks!

So youre starting to read Church history…a very big topic. Id suggest start reading from the beginning. Read St. Ignatius’s epistles first, because they are short and quick, and they were written early. Also read the didache.

Mike Aquilina (who sometimes appears on EWTN with Scott Hahn) has written a series of easy to read topical introductions to the Church Fathers. Check here:

There is also a recent book that places the ECFs in a fictional, novel type setting, but use their own words to show what they beleived and the trials they faced. It is based on excellent scholarship (there are lots of interesting footnotes), but it is a very painless way to become familiar with the ECF, and a very good read:

Begin with MIGNE in Latin and Greek, then move on to the hard stuff.

Eusebius - Ecclesiastical History Would give you a overall look at the early Church.

Early Christian Fathers by Cyril Richardson is a good sample.

A Handbook on “Patrology” would tell you who, what and when.

Oh, sure, no problem. I’ll get started on that right away.:whacky:

I think I kinda need start in the kindergarten of church history, rather than jumping into the post graduate work.

Thanks, everyone! I have noted them all, and am looking forward to shopping!

TacyLou,

I would recommend a book called “Four Witnesses” by Rod Bennett. It’s very readable, and I think it makes for a good intro to the ECFs. It’s available from Ignatius Press.
