In watching the news reports on the hurricane Katrina, I see where some newsmen are standing outside being pelted by heavy rains and strong winds. One dude finally put on some eye protection after receiving e-mails to protect himself. What is the point of these jerks standing outside putting themselfes in danger? Do they think that people are stupid and they have to be shown live how strong these hurricane winds are?. Are these network people just looking at ratings and not caring about the safety of of their reporters? Do they think that if they get blown off the screen people will stand in awe and give praises to that “brave” man for standing outside? Would these same jerks go stand in the middle of a forest fire so that people can see how hot it is? To me they have no common sense.

I agree. It also leaves the impression that it might be ok to go outside if you are a “regular” person. I did see one newscaster on this morning who was obviously searching for flying debris coming his way. :banghead:

I’ve always wondered that too. People are being evacuated because it’s unsafe, but the media is at a disaster in droves. Crazy!!

flipping thru the channels I assume the only people on the streets of new Orleans, Baton rouge, Biloxi and Gulfport are the hoards of news crews, I imagine the fox, CNN, TWC, local and network, and so forth crews are standing about 10 feet from each other, which is why their camera angles are so limited and keep sending the same images over and over - they don’t want to film the news crew standing next to them. If we are giving out stupidity awards to individual newscasters, I have some nominations but I don’t want to be sued for libel.

I remember from a hurricane last year, an NBC reporter actually being shoved down the street by the wind and wondering why on earth he would be there? They played the video like a badge of honor and I was thinking if I was his wife, I’d be furious!

At least the Weather Channel had the good sense to get their people out of New Orleans. I mean, Shepard Smith in downtown. Ya gotta be nuts.:whacky:

I like the ones that stand next to trees :whacky: so the veiwers can see the wind whipping the branches.

You just know one of these times one of these fools are going to get injured or killed.

They do it because it makes “good” tv. They are in a dangerous situation. The winds should be taken a bit more seriously at times.

Just proves again that many in the media haven’t got enough sense to get in out of the rain 😦

The best part of all the coverage was Shep in the daquari bar in the French Quarter. I seriously doubt he cared about the hurricane when it hit. I wouldn’t be suprised if Shep was 3 sheets to the wind!

Most likely.

This storm and the coverage is probably the worse thing that could of happen. When the next storm comes, people will be less likely to evacuate. That time, it might be the wrong thing.

I remember last year during one of the hurricanes, one of the guys on the weather channel (I think it was Mike Seidel) was reporting, and Al Roker walked up to him in the middle of his report. I’m assuming that Roker’s crew was reporting right next to the weather channel crew. Anyways, it got real windy and Al Roker and the weather channel guy literally clung to each other through each large gust of wind. Although it was a dangerous situation, I found the whole scenario rather funny as these two insane weather guys hung on to each other for dear life. They were both laughing through it all. I think that was the same hurricane that Stephanie Abrams of the weather channel almost got nailed by a large piece of debris. Does anyone ever notice that the weather channel always sends the same few reporters out into the hurricanes?? It’s always Mike Seidel, Stephanie Abrams, and Jim Cantore. They’re either getting paid extra for that, or the weather channel is desperately trying to kill these three off.

one surprise was Geraldo stayed in the studio instead of going out in the storm, guess he is getting old
