I am a recent convert from a Southern Baptist background. I also have a Bachelor’s degree from an evangelical Bible college. I have been recently reading the book of Romans in the Bible and I’m really wanting a good commentary on the book of Romans from a Catholic perspective. I’m wanting to replace my Protestant “faith alone” understanding of certain Romans passages with a good Catholic understanding. Any recommendations?

Thank you,

Melanie

Melanie,

A Warm Welcome Home…

I was just listening to Catholic Answers podcast with Patrick Cofin and he had Steve Ray on his program. I think you will find his website, more specifically his blog site helpful on your journey and to answer questions. He is also a former Baptist and welcomes comments and questions.
He is a true witness to our faith.

The Sacra Pagina series is pretty good, and does include some commentary by non-Catholic theologians. Overall, it’s pretty Catholic 😃 . I’ve read the Romans Commentary and really liked it.

Check around; sometimes used copies pop up on eBay and you can save a few bux. This series is fairly pricey.

Navarre.

or

and this one when it comes out… this one

both Navarre and this other new series are excellent …but with differing approaches so both are good to use!

Try the Catholic Bible commentary, the Haydock Commentary. It’s an excellent one! Oh yeah and it’s available for E-sword as well. 👍

The Epistles of Romans and James from Catholic Apologetics International.

I’d try the Navarre commentary or the St Ignatius study bible.Ignatius is the cheaper of the two and , I think, very easy to understand without dumbing down.

If with training in exegesis you are looking for something that is academic, but still close to the perspective, Fitzmyer’s commentary in the Anchor Bible set is good - Fitzmyer is a Catholic NT Scholar. An excellent critical commentary, with more consideration of historic interpretation (i.e. tradition) than other (Protestant or Liberal-Academic) critical commentaries.

However, this is primarily an academic work, and not a catechetical one. The other commentaries mentioned here would serve the other purpose better.

Fitzmyer is the translation I was going to recommend.

Some here no doubt (the “Internet Magisterium”) will tell you that he’s too liberal.

You may also be interested in Protestant “New Perspective” authors who challenge traditional Protestant readings of Paul, like N. T. Wright (author of a good book on justification in response to John Piper) and James D. G. Dunn (author of one of the best modern Protestant Romans commentaries–I see him and Fitzmyer as the two best places to start in terms of modern exegesis of the book). Of course you want to focus on Catholic authors, but if you come from a Southern Baptist background you may be unaware of how diverse modern Protestant exegesis of Romans is, and in the long run that knowledge will be useful to you if you are engaged in apologetics with Protestant family and friends.

As others here, I would likewise suggest: “The Letter of St Paul to the Romans: Ignatius Study Bible (Ignatius Catholic Study Bible)” (Here)

The related whole New Testament commentary available here. Ignatius Catholic Study Bible: New Testament.

Drs. Hahn, Pitre, and Bergsma also offer a free audio series on Romans entitled: Romans: The Gospel According to St. Paul (available here)

Dr. Pitre gets into what I think you are interested in here.

I recently did a brief Dr. Pitre audio series (2 audios) called:
What Must I Do To Be Saved? The New Perspective on Paul and the Catholic Doctrine of Justification.

This was excellent and I would recommend it (here).

Because the above study was so well done, I am also considering purchasing Dr. Pitre’s series: **Sin and Salvation: **A Bible Study on Romans (here)

(Free audio sample here) and free Romans commentary outline (here).

I also recently listened to a four-audio series by Gary Michuta entitled: Is Salvation Guaranteed? (here)

Gary’s series isn’t a commentary on Romans per se, but will have a lot of what you are interested in I think. I thought it was super.

Dr. Hahn has an excellent series on Romans (Romanism In Romans here) that I really enjoyed. It is a more advanced study, but I think with your background you’d be fine.

Hope this is what you are looking for.

God bless.
