Last year I taught the Kindergarten group, but because I’m pregnant, and this year the Kindergarten class has more than doubled, I was moved to the pre-K class. I have some great story books for Kindergarten - 1st grade, but my pre-K kids don’t have the attention span for them. My class is only about four students, all but one are boys.
Today we read The Runaway Bunny, and that worked out really well, since the relationship between the mother bunny and the little bunny is similar to our own relationship with Christ. Another one that worked well was The Rainbow Fish which is a really nice story against vanity and selfishness.
I’ve not been very inspired this year, especially considering I’m only teaching thru Christmas because my baby is due Epiphany 2009. Last year I was the most inspired during Lent and up thru Easter. I had hoped to re-use a lot of my ideas from last year, but there’s actually a big difference between what a four year old and a five year old can do, so many of my craft projects won’t fly this year, along with the stories I used last year.
My students do love listening to stories though, the room gets real quiet, and they do pay attention as long as the pages are turning regularly. Too many words on the page though, and I hear sighs, and then they get bored and start poking each other and other such nonsense.
So I’m hunting for story book suggestions for four year old boys which I can integrate into catechesis somehow. I appreciate any suggestions!
