From the Washington Post:

About 10 years ago, Tim Wu, the Columbia Law professor who coined the term network neutrality, made this prescient comment: “To love Google, you have to be a little bit of a monarchist, you have to have faith in the way people traditionally felt about the king.”

Wu was right. And now, Google has established a pattern of lobbying and threatening to acquire power. It has reached a dangerous point common to many monarchs: The moment where it no longer wants to allow dissent.
. . . .
This year, Google is on track to spend more money than any company in America on lobbying. In 2015, it was the third biggest corporate spender, paying more than Exxon Mobil, Lockheed Martin or the Koch brothers on lobbying. Much of what it is spending its money on has nothing to do with technical details regarding its search engine and everything to do with using its power in its search engine to shut out some competitors and build power over others.

To me, this article was not so much about them lobbying. It is about their arrogance and need to control. So, to me, it was news. 🤷

I guess I am never surprised when a large, powerful company is arrogant and controlling either. The parent company of the Washington Post should perhaps take a look in their mirror.

The election of Donald Trump made the left realize people weren’t on board with their totalitarian philosophy. Time to squash those wanting freedom; whether supporters of the Presidents’ agenda or those providing alternate viewpoints and discourse through social media.

Whenever I see these types of things, the quote from Archbishop Chaput comes to mind (paraphrased) “evil always preaches tolerance until it has power. Then it works to destroy good, because good’s existance is a reminder to evil that it is”.

The government DID, in fact, break up the AT&T monopoly.

And the government can break up Google.

Google is different though, they have their hands in so many different things, and probably more than what most of us know. What do you think their deep dark R&D labs have been working on in past years?

I liken them to ‘skynet’, but we will not realize that until its too late.

Rod Dreher had a more succinct post, “Google, Being Evil Again.”

The government used antitrust laws to break up companies like Standard Oil, and AT&T. If anything, Google is a bigger worldwide monopoly than those companies were. So is Facebook. Seems to me that when it comes to the internet, we are willing to give up a lot in order to avoid paying for things. I think I would be willing to pay for a search engine subscription that did not collect and sell my data. I like being the customer rather than the product.

Encourage others to use Bing or Yahoo. If someone tells you to google something, tell them I’ll use Bing or Yahoo in response just to promote the other options. Probably won’t do much but it’s worth a try.
