Is it a mortal sin, or even sin at all (scrupulous) to discuss a person (close family friend) who lost their job. I was informed awhile back from a family member about a a family friend who lost his job but really never thought twice about it. However, my girlfriend just called me very distraught because her Father mentioned to her that the person lost his job… She being very close to the person was very upset and wanted to speak with me about it… (She was actually a bit upset I did not mention it to her when I heard).
Anyways, is this a sin at all? There really was no intention to hurt the person or ruin his reputation. If anything, I was just able to offer a prayer for him and his family.
I spoke in Confession with my priest yesterday about gossip and he made it pretty clear that unless the topic being spoken was a lie and/or had the intent to harm, or was the disclosure of private information that there was no sin…
Thank you and God bless!
