Hello.

Just opened the mail and I got a “Hate” letter in response to an email I wrote to a San Francisco newspaper. In the email I’d tried to defend the Catholic Church and especially Archbishop Cordileone. It was just a short email and I did invite them to study what the Catholic Church was actually about and not to simply draw conclusions.

I’ve never gotten a letter like this before. It was several pages long but I threw it away after discussing it with my husband. I didn’t even read it through - I stopped reading it as soon as I saw what it was leading to. The letter wasn’t even addressed correctly - they misspelled my name. My husband said it was a sort of form letter.

I’m kind of rattled even though I know to expect this sort of thing.

Any constructive, compassionate comments?

I’m very sorry that you we targeted like that. This sort of action is just plain evil. I used to get hate mail when I worked at a newspaper. Most of the time, I shrugged off the letters off, although I did open them on file - so that I could evaluate the seriousness of of the threat. I kept it on file. And a couple of times I called the police just to go on record.

I did some quick research, and mainstream gay organizations, i.e. Human Right Campaign (HRC) or Gay and Lesbian Anti-Defamation League (GLAAD) are not behind these letters. They wouldn’t want to be openly tarred. If you have the person’s info, PM it to me and I’d be willing to do some more information.

It might be some local San Francisco organizations. You probably do have some ulltra-radical groups in that area. The NYC area is that way as well.

People are most opposed to the group NOM (the National Organization for Marriage). Or people may be ultra revved up because of gay pride weekend.

They are cowards and maniacs. Again, I’m sorry they were so awful to you. You might want to have someone read the letter to make sure that the letter doesn’t contain any threats.

I’m sorry for the stressful, hateful time they caused you.

God bless you.

Yes. the comment came from someone who is: 1-steeped in their sins 2-immature. You came, as it were, into a dark room with a light and some abhor the light. Wise decision to not read it through. The CC leaves very few people indifferent. Being rattled is totally understandable.

A newspaper sent you a several page “hate letter” because you sent in an opinion on one of their stories? That’s really, really strange!

I guess they’ve hated the Catholic church in the first place.

Someone consumed in hatred can’t hear reasonable voice.

How did they get your mailing address from an E-mail? I would be concerned about this. Is the newspaper violating your privacy? Or did you put your address in the E-mail? this is confusing.

From the Sermon on the Mount:
10 Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: 12 Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.

Pray for their conversion.

It’s kind of weird to be getting hate mail from a newspaper. They’re supposed to be more professional than that. Was this an alternative weekly, like SF Weekly or the Bay Guardian? The people who staff alternative weeklies aren’t exactly friendly to people who have “right-wing” views

I am sorry your experienced this verbal persecution but this is small in comparison to what may await all of faithful to the teachings of Holy Mother Church. I have heard from those investigating into this and can assure you that this is most definately the “work of the devil himself” . Stand fast to your faith and remain true to Him in this day and realize we fight not against flesh and blood but principalities and princes of this world. (Ephesians I think) My prayers and love,
mlz

Hello.

Sorry I was unclear.

Someone got my name from the email to the newspaper and they (they= the person who got my name) sent me the letter.

So it was an employee at the newspaper? Sorry I’m confused, how could a random person gain your email address from a newspaper?

Was your email printed along with your email address?

Most newspapers require anyone posting a letter in the “Opinions” section of a newspaper must openly list their email address or mailing address so those with opposing opinions can address the original writer directly.

So if you put a letter or opinion in the public forum, you will be required to give your valid contact information and it will be made public so others can respond to you.

Ahhh, that is illegal in Australia, hence the disconnect. The papers can only print your name, pseudonym and suburb. Not allowed to print phone numbers, home addresses or email addresses.

Only if by “most” you mean “hardly any”. I’ve never seen a paper do this. Usually the person’s first name in written, and what neighborhood or city they live in. People who want to oppose can write into the paper itself. It is insane and dangerous to print someone’s home address in the newpaper. What if instead of a three page hate letter, some nut came by with a gun?

Please keep in mind that a “mailing address” does not necessarily mean one’s residential address; many people have P.O. Boxes they use for sending and receiving mail. This keeps one’s residential address private.

Agreed. Only one’s name and city. But it wouldn’t be too hard to find many people’s addresses in the white pages.

Matthew 5 :11-15
" Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: [12] Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you. [13] You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. [14] You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. [15] Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house."

God Bless you AND continue to be a BRIGHT light for God:thumbsup:
