Got a Nintendo Switch for Christmas. Any good games?

I got a Nintendo Switch for Christmas and I love it.

So far I have Mega Man 11, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary, and Stardew Valley. Does anyone have any other great recommendations?
 
Super Mario Odyssey is a really fun experience and I’m been playing Smash Ultimate too. I have also heard good things Breath of the Wild but I havent been able to play it yet.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe comes to mind too.
 
Smash Ultimate is great. My buds and I have had a lot of fun with Mario vs. Rabbids. Zelda Breath of the Wild was fun. And I like the 8 bit classic library
 
My kids got one. They have Super Mario Odyssey and Minecraft Story mode and another Mario game ( I can’t remember which one). Breath of the Wild was awesome but we already had that on our Wii U…we’re Nintendo nerds lol!
 
I have Skyrim,Legend of Zelda:BOTW,and Dark Souls: Remastered.

Dark Souls Remastered seems way harder than a lot of games.
 
The NBA 2k games are good. Diablo 3, Mario Odessey, Mario Kart, Zelda are all good games too.
 
Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are the three really big Nintendo games on it right now, not counting ports from the WiiU like Mario Kart 8. I loved Odyssey, and I’m mostly enjoying Ultimate. Breath of the Wild was a bit of a disappointment to me, but it’s a massive game with some good moments.

A few other games I’ve played and enjoyed a lot:
  • Diablo III: Eternal Edition: I haven’t beaten the game due to getting it very close to Ultimate’s release, but it’s fun. That should probably go without saying given that it’s Diablo III.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2: I’m still in the middle of playing it, and while it’s not on the level of the first game, it’s still fun and has a lot of what made the first game great. If you liked the first but wished that it had more of a traditional goofy anime tone, then this one should really appeal to you.
  • Sonic Mania: I like the old 2D Sonic games, and this one is definitely a fantastic homage to those games. It’s also just a really fun game, so you don’t necessarily have to be a Sonic fan to enjoy it.
  • South Park: The Fractured but Whole: Unlike Sonic Mania, this one really is just for the South Park fans. It’s not a bad game, but I felt it was less fun than the first, and most of the enjoyment definitely comes from the South Park quality and style of writing. Still, as a fan, I laughed my way through this one.

They absolutely dominated the console space during the Wii/360/PS3 generation, at least during the early years. Microsoft and Sony closed out the generation better, but last I checked, the Wii was still the best-selling console from it. The Switch, while maybe not as successful as the Wii or PS4, is still doing very well and with a few major releases already and more announced.

And, of course, Nintendo still dominates the handheld market.

I love Dark Souls. I don’t know how well it works on the switch, but the series is one of my all-time favorites. Smash Ultimate is also amazing.

This general attitude from the community actually turned me off Dark Souls for a while. Even if I didn’t have to really interact with them in game, it still made reading wikis and guides wholly unpleasant. I did eventually pick it up, and I enjoyed it for a little bit, but I never got that invested. The world just never clicked with me, and with that, much of the motivation to push through the challenge was gone.

Strangely, I absolutely loved Dark Souls II, and really regret not having more time to play it in college. It was still challenging, but I really wanted to explore the world in that game, unlike the first. What little I got to try of Bloodborne at a friend’s house makes me think I’d like it even more.
 
I totally understand: I couldn’t find the Burg and kept getting killed by the skeletons in the graveyard. I think the most valuable lesson you can learn about Dark Souls is that you just have to not rely on anybody to do anything. It sucks, yeah, but if you figure out the basics of the game yourself, everything gets way easier.
 
Breath of the Wild is amazing if you like open world games.

If you’re into Metroidvanias I would recommend Hollow Knight.

And if you like strategy games, Into the Breach is really good.

Also Mario Kart and Smash are fun party games. On that note, if multiplayer is your thing (especially couch co-op), you should check out Overcooked and/or Overcooked 2.

Agreed! It was a throw back to the original game which was pretty much open world. It took a while for me to get into it but I ended up really enjoying it. I have only played it once but usually the second time I play a game is when I really start to like it. I’ll be honest the only reason we got the switch was for the next Zelda game lol…I’m a Legend of Zelda nut!

I think Nintendo is marketed more towards kids/families. It was the only consul I ever had as a kid and even now it’s the only brand I use. Nintendo forever! 🙂

It was what I grew up with. My parents didn’t trust most of the games on Playstation, but my mom had at least played a little of the original Donkey Kong so was OK with Nintendo. Funnily, when I had DK64 originally, someone gave her the impression that you knock a guy’s head off, and that got her to take the game away. Apparently, he forgot to mention that you did it to a cardboard puppet. 😆
 
No one mentioned Splatoon 2 yet? 😝

There are a lot of great games for the Switch, and a bunch of games from the Wii U that have been ported over.

New games:
  • Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Splatoon 2
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Super Mario Party
  • Kirby Star Allies
Ports:
  • Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
  • Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (comes out in a week)
If you like Mega Man 11, they also have the Mega Man Legacy Collection (1 & 2) and Mega Man X Legacy Collection (1 & 2). Together those games give you Mena Man 1–10 and Mega Man X 1–8.

For me, Zelda, Mario Odyssey, and Splatoon 2 have offered me plenty to do in the past 18 months that I’ve had the Switch. The rest of the games are just icing on the cake. Now that Smash Bros. is out, I’ll be playing that a lot, but I’ll eventually end up back with Splatoon. I just can’t stop playing that one.

I need to pick those up. I had the first Mega Man Legacy Collection on 3DS, but the circle pad broke, and I’ve been unable to get my Mega Man fix for a while now. I also really want to try Mega Man 11, since it sounds like it was a really good modern take on the series.
