Sept through April, about 28 one-hour classes on Wednesday evenings.

We have Children’s Faith Formation classes on Sunday mornings between the Masses.
Saturday afternoon for the Hispanic kids.
Used to be called the Parish School of Religion.
CCD was an old term when I was a kid.

Well, Clare, some habits die hard, especially for those who are homeschooled and never heard there’s been an updated, more accurate, all encompassing term that’s been around 20+ years. Can’t blame 'em. 😉

I don’t know when we have “CCD,” I just let my little guys run around in the cry room. Kidding!

Sunday mornings, 930 - 1100.

Which curriculum does your CCD? Is it approved by the Archdiocese? For DREs/DYEs, do you recommend, materials for home study?

There are 6 approved curriculums in our Diocese…I used RCL Benziger “Bendicidos” bi-lingual materials. Follows the Lectionary.
We use EDGE & LifeTeen for the later grades. Relational ministry…works VERY well. Those who want to home-study here do I through my office…I supply the textbooks and I meet with the kids quarterly to make sure they’re on track. They receive credit as though they are enrolled in the classes…and therefore are on track for Sacraments and Father knows that they are actively studying their faith with supervision. Have several families that do this. When we have big events, Stations, May Crowning, Community Service projects etc., they come in and join with us. Our end of the year picnic is traditionally the last day…which is this Sunday, along with First Holy Communion. Should be a big day packed with blessings.👍

That’s fascinating.

We follow the Archdiocese of Washington Religion Curriculum Guide: “Forming Disciples for the New Evangelization,” which highlights 6 key elements of Catholic Life:
  • Knowledge of Faith
  • Liturgy and Worship
  • Morality
  • Prayer
  • Education in Living in the Christian Community
  • Evangelization and Apostolic Life
The textbook, “Finding God, Our Response to God’s Gifts” by Loyola Press, is also approved.

We are so lucky that faith formation for Catholics is a life long process, no?

What do you think?

When does your church have grade school CCD classes?
We have the bulk of the kids in on Sundays between Masses. This year, we have been blessed to have more kids enroll than the fire code will allow. 🙂 So we added sessions for some grades later on Sundays.

FWIW, our diocese used to call it Religious Education and changed it to Lifelong Faith Formation. But in our parish, everyone calls it CCE or CCD including Father and the DRE. 😃

My 2 cents:
I wish cradle Catholics believed this. They tend to think…“oh, I’ve gotten all my Sacraments…I’m done with all that.”
I would love to see more adults in the classes we offer for them. They are really informative, supportive, and community-affirming classes. Great teachers too!
😃

“Which curriculum does your CCD? Is it approved by the Archdiocese?”

The diocese approves of our parish’s use of the Faith & Life series.

I have my own curriculum for 6th grade, which was approved by my DRE and the diocesan director of Catechesis.
