I am attending my nephew’s high school graduation Mass. How does this Mass work (order of service). Thanks!

When I’ve seen it done, it was just a regular Mass with the homily addressed to the graduates. Then diplomas follow Mass… sadly, in the church rather than a more fitting venue for the hooting&hollering of graduation. I have never been more uncomfortable at a joyful occasion than with these people acting like the house of the Lord was just some auditorium or arena.

I’ve never experienced the actual graduation ceremony following the Mass. In every case it was a special Mass on Sunday and the Graduation ceremonies were done later in the week in an auditorium.
In this town the only venue big enough for graduations is the Pentecostal church and it’s used every year by the high school and the college (we no longer have Catholic schools so graduation Masses fell by the wayside in the late 90s when the Catholic High School closed its doors).

same as any Mass, just some recognition of the graduates, perhaps some of them will do readings, intentions etc. They may receive a special blessing, and if it is baccalaureate there may be some kind of procession or blessing. If the Mass is in conjunction with graduation, they should not actually receive their diplomas during Mass, but before or after.
in our small Ohio town HS graduation was in our parish church because it was the only venue big enough. Our graduating parishioners attended the last Mass at noon with their families, which was baccalaureat, the homily was addressed to them, they were recognized by name and had a special blessing, but it was the regular Sunday readings etc… There was a small punch and cake reception afterward. By then the parking lot had cleared out, and the rest of the graduates and families came in for the actual graduation. people were generally very restrained by a gentle reminder of the surroundings and inappropriate behavior was rare.
our graduation Mass here is just the regular Noon Mass, which is where most of the youth come anyhow, and all graduating parishioners from local HS, colleges etc. are invited to wear cap and gown, process in, and sit in reserved pews. Father addresses the homily to them, and gives them a blessing. The parents usually host a modest reception in the parish hall afterward, and people stay after to take pictures. There actual graduation is at their various schools.
the 8th grade graduates of our parish school will graduate in the context of Mass, they will do the readings, songs etc as they do for their regular school Masses, and diplomas are awarded after the final blessing as each student comes forward. This is on a weekday evening.

Mass at my high school actually took place in the auditorium…
Graduation ceremonies were later that night. So, its going to really depend on your specific school.

The graduates will process out before the priest; because, the priest will process following the graduates. More than likely, some of the graduates will do the readings, responsorial psalm, prayer intentions, exedra all depending on the norms of the parish. Then Mass will begin just as usual. After the Eucharistic Celebration, the diplomas will more than likely be passed out. The church may complete Mass before doing so, or some parishes do the post communion and closing prayers before the graduates are called to the front to receive their diplomas. We had a graduation Mass and it was beautiful!!!
