Are we bound under grave obligation to avoid only servile work or also any type of work that hinders worship due to God on these days? I sometimes spend my Sundays studying and doing homework I failed to complete on Friday and Saturday

God understands if curcumstances are not condusive to avoiding servile work.

I am a mother of a toddler. If my toddler has a diaper blow out and poop up to her hair, I cannot say “oh well, it’s Sunday tough luck kid.” No, I must hose her down, throw her clothes in the wash and take care of a million other things.

Similarly, if I am caring for my mildly autistic niece and she is having trouble with food texture that day, God understand if I bake bread from scratch because she is struggling with eating sliced bread.

Because I was adopted as a teen, I did not have a college fund like my brothers. (honestly better that way in the long run). I didn’t get much money from the government or scholarships due to many complicated circumstances. I had to have two or three jobs. I frequently had to work on Sunday and I always had to study/write papers on Sunday. It was a temporary time in my life and I always made it to Mass.

God understands where you are and what you need to do. I’ve needed to run to the grocer on Sunday because unplanned guests on Saturday ate all our food.

Now, if I planned to work on Sunday because of laziness, that’s another story. It would be wrong to take Saturday to play video games all day and not study because you felt like it. It is always best to do what you can to make Sunday a day of rest. But if life dictates that your responsibilties fall on Sunday—take care of them.

In today’s world unfortunately we don’t always have the option of not working. Christ himself called out the Pharisees for being hipocrites in the subject.

The fact is Sundays aren’t what they used to be. Neither are weekends in general. About 30% of the population in the USA works a job where weekends aren’t off. That’s not their fault. And you need to make a living.

And don’t even tell me I’m wrong. Don’t stick a yoke on me just because I have a job that requires work on Sunday. I still go to Mass every Sunday or the vigil Saturday night.

Yes we should avoid any work or any activity which prevents us from worshipping God on Sunday and Holy Days. If you are still going to Mass then studying and homework shouldn’t be a problem. Studying isn’t servile work anyway.

That said, it is better if we can get any work we can do done on other days. That doesn’t mean we don’t lift a finger. It means we do what we can to set aside Sunday for God.

Studying, artwork, intellectual work is not servile work.
