Anyone know any really great Benedictine Monasteries in the USA?

By great I mean really really really Catholic. i.e. orthodox. šŸ™‚

Thanks

St. Meinrad Archabbey is the only one I know. It is the largest in North America, and the only Archabbey too I believe.

Thanks,

Yes this really looks like an interesting place.

All I can say about the Benedictines is keep your distance from Saint Johnā€™s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota. Because there has been a good deal of abuse-related controversy surrounding that place ( link ). As well as a fair amount of heterodoxy ( link ).

I am not directly familar with it, but one that has gotten favorable attention here at CAF is: the Monastery of Our Lady of the Annuciation of Clear Creek which is located in Hulbert, Oklahoma.

It is a new monastery and most of its buildings are incomplete. But I think you will like what they do, and what they plan to do.
I know someone who just went in there.

I also have heard of Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon, and thereā€™s 1 here in CA, but I donā€™t know much about that one either. I know the 1 in CA does work with kids and retreats and stuff.

Yep. Here in the midwest:

Nice community in alot of ways, but Iā€™m not sure I can agree with their theology.
The St. Benedict Center is a non-profit, ecumenical retreat and conference center, founded by the Missionary Benedictines of Christ the King Priory. As Benedictines we share our hospitality and spirituality with those who search for personal and spiritual growth. We welcome individuals and groups of all Christian denominations, as they seek God in a peaceful and quiet setting. We provide an atmosphere that is conducive to prayer, rest, and renewal for laity, clergy, and religious.

Iā€™d love a Benedictine monastery that did work like Catholic Answers! that would be so cool!

You could to the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Clyde, MO,

or their neighboring brother monastery

Conception Abbey in Conception, MO.

Both are very prayerful and very Catholic.

This is good. These are great suggestions.

Iā€™m writing them all down. I will investigate them all.

Iā€™m actually planning to go ā€œMonastery Hoppingā€ at some point in the near futureā€¦ So Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll be checking out a number of these monasteries.

Thanks again:thumbsup:

And yet at the same time this Abbey commissioned the very first hand written and illuminated Bible in over 500 years. I believe this Bible is nearing completion after some 5 + years of work.

We have St. Josephā€™s Abbey in St. Benedict, Louisiana. Iā€™ve been on retreats there since I was a kid. Right across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans.

Itā€™s finished! And it was on display at Omahaā€™s Joslyn Museum about a year ago. Literally thousands of people came to see the bible, and I hear that it is gorgeous! My mother is a docent at the museum, and she said that some people would stand there and look at the pictures, and read the gospel, and would litteraly weep because it was so beautiful! I wasnā€™t able to get down there to see it, but I really regret that I didnā€™t see the display.

Wow! I have followed this project for years. I have framed pieces of some of Donald Jacksonā€™s other works as well as pages from the Book of Kells. Iā€™m going to order the DVD and hope that the Bible comes somewhere near travelling distance.

Looks like I will get to see it (God willing) in 2009 when it comes to Mobile, AL - a mere 3 hr drive! šŸ˜ƒ
