I’ve been hearing a lot about this “Great Catholic Monarch”. Can someone please explain to me who this might be and why we are in need of a monarch?

Can you give us any context? This is the first I’ve heard of it

Well, I’ve been looking into this prophecy called “The Last Roman Emperor” or “The Great Catholic Monarch”. I’ve only done surface research, so I know very little. He is supposedly supposed to be revealed before the Anti-Christ but also signaling the end of an age rather than an end of days. He’s also supposed to reign over the world as a Catholic monarch, but most of the information I’ve gotten was from seemingly sedevacantist sources, so I can’t really say.

You might be interested in this book. Using Scripture; the Church Fathers; and, to a lesser extent, approved (and only approved) private revelations, Birch lays out a possible timeline for the events of the end times. Apparently there is a lot of agreement in those sources that before the anti-Christ, there will be a Great King crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the reigning Pope. Birch acknowledges that it seems impossible to us, because monarchies are becoming less and less common. Nonetheless, that’s what the prophecies indicate.

I’m only about half-way through the book, but so far, he’s making a very good case for his timeline.

I’ll be sure to take a look at it. Looks very interesting. Also, thanks for the info.

Hi @CapitalistCatholic

I am certainly familiar with the prophecies which supposedly foretell the rise of this eschatological figure. They all belong to the category of private revelation.

A number of them are clearly spurious in nature (i.e. derived from folklore or popular legend or even purposefully fraudulent), whilst some are genuine in origin and can be traced (largely to the medieval or early modern period).

Of the prophecies for which we have documentary evidence to back up their credence (as being derived from words or writings by saints or other holy persons), most of them cohere in the basic narrative: at the end of a period of minor tribulation foreshadowing the final persecution of the church but prior to the conversion of the Jews and the reign of Antichrist, the church militant will be closely conformed (as far as it is is possible on earth) with the church triumphant in heaven, such that there will be a period of peace granted to the world which a “great monarch” will be instrumental in bringing about. This monarch shall play a key role in spreading the gospel to all nations, thereby fulfilling the “times of the gentiles” and taking the role of the katechon in 2 Thessalonians, who restrains the manifestation of Antichrist.

Obviously, I don’t know if any of this will happen or if it’s just pious hope but nothing in it really conflicts with what we know from public revelation, so I’m at least open to the idea.
