Has anyone seen either Going My Way, or The Bells Of Saint Mary’s? Both Starring Bing Crosby as a Priest. Excellent family entertainment and both movies won an Oscar. They were on Turner Classic Movies Channel last evening. If you havent seen these I highly reccomend them. The Bells Of Saint Mary’s was the sequel to Going My Way.

We watched them, too. They seem quaint to some people these days, but they were rather progressive for their time dealing with such subjects as gangs, prostitution, premarital sex, etc. None of these topics were explicitly mentioned, but it doesn’t take the sharpest tack in the box to read between the lines to see what they were talking about and dealing with. Now days it would be explicit and the priest would be the one committing every sin in the book! We need to pray and pray hard for our good priests!

And pray harder for our not so good Priests. I think in this world that is so openly cynical and critical, we sometimes forget the magnitude of the responsibility of Holy Orders. We have asked sinful imperfect men to assume awesome responsibilities. In addition to providing to us the critical sacraments, we ask them to be our spiritual guide, our confidants, the administrator of our parishes, and minister to the poor and hurting and mourning. Everytime I reflect on it, I realize the power and graces of our God who is with them even in their worst days and how our expectations of our Priests are too much for the greatest and holiest of men much less the average sinful man without the providential graces God gives them every day.

I’ve seen both many, many times.

Just dial “O” for O’Malley!

I recently saw Going My Way for the first time and really enjoyed it. Same with Song of Bernadette. As a member of RCIA, I am soaking up all things Catholic like a sponge! Any other suggestions of good Catholic oriented movies?

Keys of the Kingdom

In this House of Brede

Sound of Music (easy to overlook the obvious)

The Scarlet and the Black (the one with Gregory Peck as a priest working in the Vatican rescuing people from the Nazis.)

I Confess (Hitchcock, with Montgomery Clift)

Come to the Stable

the one with Sidney Poitier who builds a chapel for the nuns, dang it is a Christmas movie, too, and I can’t remember the title.
Frank Sinatra as a priest and Fred McMurray as a reporter with nuns trying to build a convent, dang lost that title too.

take grandma to the home, kids.

“A Man For All Seasons.”
“Lily of the Fields.” The one about the black man and the nuns.

“The Miracle of the Bells” is the movie with Fred MacMurray and Frank Sinatra mentioned above.

I love “The Nun’s Story”. I think I got more out of the movie because I had read the book first, and that’s usually a death-blow to liking a movie for me.

“The Fourth Wiseman” starring Martin Sheen

I thought Cinderella Man was good…except for one small “loss of faith” moment, there were many virtues that teenage men should pick up on in this movie.

in XT.

I guess I am showing my age…but I can remember way back when a priest in a movie was almost always the good guy! How times have changed!

My kids LOVE The Trouble with Angels…

One of my favorite movies… Entertaining Angels… The Dorothy Day Story (appropriate for older teens & adults)

And there’s a new movie out on DVD… the title is something like
The Mondavo Miracle ??
