Great papal schism/council of pisa

Can someone please explain these events to me? My understanding from what I’ve read is that there was illegitimate claim to the papacy, but I can’t figure out by who? Who was the last legitimate pope before the schism? Were these guys anti-popes? How did the illegitimate pope lose his position? Did he submit to a council? Did he die and no other rose up to claim the papacy? The list of popes on newadvent.org goes from Boniface to Innocent, with no mention of Clement or Gregory, and I’m getting confused as I write this…
For that 30 years of the schism, how did one know who the pope was, and why did it go on so long?
I see how this has nothing to do with infallibility since no “ex cathedra” statements came out of the time, but it does require some clarification.

I don’t have the details of this history memorized or I would answer your questions. Karl Keating has a short section on this in Catholicism and Fundamentalism as well. This is the famous “three rival popes” objection.
