Could someone tell me please where the quote “but someone greater than Moses is here” I think that’s the correct quotation (it could be ‘something’ rather than ‘someone’). If the quote or similar appears in alternative books of the New Testament could you give me the references please.?

Thank you

Barb,

The quote itself is probably from Hebrews 3:3. “But he is worthy of more ‘glory’ than Moses, as the founder of a house has more ‘honor’ than the house itself.”

Another possibility is Matthew 12:41-42: “At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generaiton and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here. At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here.” Jesus is ranting at a request for a sign.

Luke 11:31-32 parallels the text from Matthew.

🙂 … I wonder if you can tell me if there is any particular reason you put ‘honor’ and ‘glory’ in inverted commas? looked up my Good News (Catholic Edition) Bible and Hebrews in my translation does use glory and honour.
If perchance you should stumble across any Old Testament reference(s) re the quotations from Matthew 12 and Hebrews 3, I would be very greatful. I will try to research the matter myself altho I feel you have in all probability given me as much as you are able and there is no connecting reference(s) in the Old Testament.

Barb,

Thank you for your kind words.

I use the red paperback New American Bible, and it has the words “honor” and “glory” in quotes. (Why it does this I cannot tell; I don’t think the original Greek has punctuation.) And I use the typographical standard that if I am quoting something that itself contains a quote, the inner quote goes inside of single quotes rather than double quotes.

I’m not sure what you mean by “Old Testament references regarding the quotations.” The repentance of Nineveh is found in Jonah 3 and the story of the queen of Sheba (“the south”) is found in I Kings 10. (Incidentally, there is a tribe of Jews in Ethiopia known as the Falashas; they are descended from the queen of Sheba.)

Hi again Liberian…thanks heaps for the above and I understand what you mean by inverted commas etc…and you have again answered me and well…what I meant by Old Testament references, was I would like to read the story of Ni nevah’s repentance and also the story of The Queen of Sheba and now I dont have to search, because you have very kindly provided the references. Thanks again!
