Thus was founded the particular Church of Byzantine Rite Greek Catholics. Much more numerous were the Greek Catholics of Latin Rite, who formed the majority of the population in some Aegean islands.

What is the difference between Latin Rite Greek Catholics (I thought only Roman Catholics were Latin Rite) and Byzantine Rite Greek Catholics?

My goal is not to be condesending. But, that should be obvious. The only difference is the Rite or Church itself. The Greek catholics are Greek catholics. The Roman Catholic church does a Latin Mass and the Byzantine church does a Divine Liturgy. Their services are different but they send the same messsage. Hope.

While I understand that the Byzantine do call their Masses the Divine Liturgy, I would like to point out that the Mass is the Divine Liturgy. Divine Liturgy is just another name for the Sacrament or Mystery, same as Lord’s Supper and Holy Communion. Each name tells you something about the Mass. Sorry if that sounds nitpicky.

It really shouldn’t say “Latin Rite Greek Catholics” but rather “Catholic Greeks who practice the Latin Rite.” Big difference there. In other words, the Aegean Islands (many of which are very tiny) are part of Greece, and some of the population happens to be Catholic and observes the Latin Rite. My guess is that the presence of the Latin Rite on some of the Aegean Islands is a left-over of the Crusades (or at least of Crusaders who may have settled there).

There is no Latin Rite. There are rites whose origional Liturgical language was Latin, such as the Mass of the Roman Rite which since the council of Trent the overwhelming majority of Latin Catholics participate in, either in the Ordinary form or the Extraordinary Form. What we hear called the Latin Mass or the Latin Rite is the Roman Rite. (Ambrosian Rite. Dominican Rite etc. are rites of the Church celebrated in small numbers, or seldom).

Byzantine Catholic churches use various languages , including some which use Greek.

I assume “Latin Rite Greek Catholics” (actually Roman Rite Greek Catholics) would be Catholics living in Greece who are western or Latin church Catholics. I think a point in the article you reference is to describe the shift in demographics of Catholics both Roman rite and Byzantine. It’s interesting and tragic. There has been much suffering for Greek people both Catholics and Orthodox.

Wikipedia is not always a totally accurate source for things ecclesiastical.

It might be better to call these people Ethnic Greek Roman-rite Catholics, as they are either ethnic Greeks (such as the fictional Damian Karras and his mother of THE EXORCIST) or at least speak Greek as a mother tongue.

I just read The Exorcist and didn’t think much about that. Good observation.

Wikipedia, is not always accurate on matters NON ecclesiactial as well. Most colleges and universities won’t allow wikipedia as a reference source.:hmmm: for good reason.
