Today is St Patrick’s day, but unlike any I have ever known. Today pubs, restaurants, and theatres are all closed in Ireland. There is no parades and the streets are almost completely empty and huge numbers have lost their jobs. It is a sombre day, but perhaps one suitable for reflection on what St Patrick achieved, as a foreigner who came to the ends of the earth to advance the kingdom.
It was strange today having no public mass, as gatherings of more than 100 are not allowed and this occurred also last Sunday. We watched the mass from our parish church on the web and the priest gave a great encouraging homily.
Let us all, Irish, Catholics, Christians and people of good will all rejoice; in fact let the whole cosmos rejoice because ‘all will be well’ (Julian of Norwich).
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the holy Spirit. Ro 15:13.
