Decades ago, when I was in the convent for several months,
we chanted the Dies Irae. “That day of wrath…”
The beauty of the chant was, in a sense, contrapuntal
to the sentiments expressed, in the lyrics.
The chant was perfectly exquisite.

Happily, these are no longer the sentiments expressed
at a funeral Mass. Now, white vestements are worn,
and the emphasis has shifted to the joy of the resurrection.

I love Gregorian chant. I have a free CD sent to me by the monks of Notre Dame that I listen to all the time.

Years ago when the Monks of Santo Domingo had their first album on Gregorian Chant at the top ten list(this is true), there was a book that came out, “The Music of Silence.” in which the author explained the songs and the relevance of each to the Liturgy of the Hours, which the album is about.
I never knew this book existed, until one day while shopping at Wal-Mart, I came across the clearence bin where they had books for $.99. I started looking through the cluster of books and found “The Music Of Silence,” which I immediately purchased,…thank God for sallow Americans, who passed up this wonderful book.
Anyway, the book explained that the Liturgy of the Hours, were referred to as the “Seasons of the Day.” Each hour has its own character, and accordingly, each Gregorian Chant him on the Album, reflects the mood and character of the day, at that hour.
The original book isn’t in print anymore, but they have a 2nd edition, which I just discovered, while looking to see if used versions of the original were available.
