One night I was reading an interesting article about guardian angels. I never really thought much about them as an adult. The article really struck me. They had mentioned that you should not name your guardian angel. This too struck me as it was something I had never thought of. It said that they have unique names given to the by God.

So as I said my prayers before going to sleep, I asked the name of my angel could be revealed to me.

As I started to wake up the next morning, there was a name stuck in my head. I really remembered it. It “sounded” Latin. So I looked it up online. The only place this name came up was the botanical name for a particular shrub, so it was definitely Latin. So I tried a language search, and sure enough it came up as the non gendered form of XXX. I thought this was interesting since 1. I never heard the word before, and 2. Angels don’t have genders. So I looked up the gendered name and got a couple hits. I think one was for a saint if I remember correctly.

Then about a week or so later, I was listening to Relevant radio on the way home from mass, and an exorcist was being interviewed. He was going to be on a TV show that week. A major cable network show that looks at the unexplained. Anyhow, they were talking about a particular instance, and the exorcist was very adamant that the interviewer NOT say the name of the demon they were talking about on air. I don’t remember the exact concern other than their name gives them power. This got me thinking about the name I woke up with. Was it a trick? Was it honest? I still know the name, but I have refused to use it or even think of it.

So no question here really. Only putting this out there for an interesting conversation topic.

Some years ago, iirc, after reading something or hearing something, I asked or thought about asking my Guardian Angel their name, and I too go a name appear in my mind. I haven’t addressed my G.A. by that because I have no way of knowing if it was my G.A. or a demon. So I too don’t use, or think about it. Just address my angel as G.A. and leave it there. They know when I am addressing them.

Don’t Name Your Guardian Angel

Judges 13:17-19 " 17* Then Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “What is your name, that we may honor you when your words come true?” 18e The angel of the LORD answered him: Why do you ask my name? It is wondrous."

For a long time I chose an arbitrary name for my “angel” and selected Jessie. I remember saying, also, that unless I heard differently that’s how I would refer to them since it seemed the friendly thing to do. Then one day while musing on the topic I was told the name and have used it ever since. Whether it was a direct answer or the result of my imagination is immaterial. Chances are we couldn’t pronounce the names of any heavenly creatures anyway. If I say the name, angel knows who I’m talking to.

I like what a gal named Denise said in response to one of the articles cited above;

“I named my guardian angel when I was 7. I remember doing so, not to have authority over him, but because I sensed we were on a journey together and it just seemed the practical thing to do to communicate with him. I am sorry if this isn’t right, but I’ve known him for so long by the name I gave him that it’s hard not to think of him by that name. I communicate with him pretty much on a daily basis and he has never instructed me differently or seemed to mind.”

I used to think it would be nice to know the name of my angel, but I read on here that we’re not supposed to ask or know the names of angels other than those named in Scripture - the archangels Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and (via Eastern tradition) Uriel.

So after that I just called my guardian angel “Angel”.

According to the Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy , 217 (under the heading about Devotion to the Holy Angels):

“The practice of assigning names to the Holy Angels should be discouraged, except in the cases of Gabriel, Raphael and Michael whose names are contained in Holy Scripture.”

It does not give a reason for this but I have read elsewhere that there could be two reasons (speculation) for not naming angels:
  1. Only God has authority over the angels and if someone names an angel it implies they also have authority over that angel.
  2. The devil is clever meaning how would a person truly know if the spirit they were naming was an angel or a demon (fallen angel).

Father Barron recently spoke about out guardian angels and said that we would meet ours in Heaven…don’t know why but that really stuck with me…

Uriel’s in a bunch of non-canonical Biblical apocrypha as well as in the writings of St. Gregory the Great.
Uriel can also be found depicted in various Latin Catholic churches.
For these reasons, I feel okay with mentioning the name of Uriel.
