Angels, Guardian Angels:padrepio.catholicwebservices.com/ENGLISH/Guardian_Angel.htm

It is a fact that we all have a guardian angel. I named my guardian angel the same name as my confirmation name.

What do we know about what our guardian angels do after we die? Do they stay with us in purgatory? Is there a time when the guardian angels retire?

I guess the only retirement that the will have is if we don’t listen to them:eek: God Bless

Do you get the idea that we have a gardian angel from Scripture or Tradition? Just curious.

I always sort of figured they come party w/us & then recycle to a new soul since there appear to be a limited supply of angels…though who says God doesn’t do like Doritos and just make more. I never thought of it this way before. I like Padre Pio’s prayer to my guardian Angel.

I greet you my guardian angel and I honor you.
Please pray for me and pray in my place when I find it so difficult to pray.
Deign also, in the divine light, to meet with the guardian angels of those whom I love the most, and all those whom I am spiritually united, to enlighten them, to protect them and to guide them.
Amen.

That every individual soul has a guardian angel has never been defined by the Church, and is, consequently, not an article of faith; but it is the “mind of the Church”, as St. Jerome expressed it: “how great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard it.” (Comm. in Matt., xviii, lib. II).

In the Bible this doctrine is clearly discernible and its development is well marked. In Genesis 28-29, angels not only act as the executors of God’s wrath against the cities of the plain, but they deliver Lot from danger; in Exodus 12-13, and Ecclesiasticus 17:17 (Septuagint).

This sums up the Old Testament doctrine on the point; it is clear that the Old Testament conceived of God’s angels as His ministers who carried out his behests, cf. II Machabees 3:25; 10:29; 11:6; 15:23. But in the New Testament the doctrine is stated with greater precision. Angels are everywhere the intermediaries between God and man; and Christ set a seal upon the Old Testament teaching: “See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10). A twofold aspect of the doctrine is here put before us: even little children have guardian angels, and these same angels lose not the vision of God by the fact that they have a mission to fulfil on earth.

**So you see both the OT and the NT discuss guardian angels. It is “the mind” of the Church. Padre Pio says he talked to his guardian angel. **

Se la vie.

preacher on evengelical station has had a wonderful series of lectures on angels this past week, quoting (accurately) Thomas Aquinas as an expert. portion of talks I heard were very Catholic in understanding. He did make one interesting statement about guardian angels, which he attributed to John Calvin, who supposedly said that we humans are so important to God that one angel is not enough, the entire race of angels was created especially to cater to us, and every angel is devoted collectively to caring for and guarding each human being. Comments?

I’m thinking that only the “lowest” order of angels is dedicated to watching over humanity. Other orders, such as the Seraphim, have the adoration of God as their chief function.

I heard that it was wrong to name our guardian angel since they already have a name given to it by God.

Yes, they do offer us comfort while we are in purgatory.

It’s anyone’s guess because as far as I know, it is not documented anywhere.

You have a guardian angel:) They are awsome.God is so gracious he gives us so much help in our exile:thumbsup: God Bless you

(I didn’t know this topic was also here. I copied my post from the 'naming your guardian angel and pasted it here too)

I dont’ believe they can ‘retire’. God has created zillions of angels and every human being ever created has one, whether they recognize it or not. God loves humanity SO much that he gave us all angel for help.

To name or not to name…

I just wonder if the CCC has any word on this matter, or is it just that certain people find it uncomfortable about the naming of your guardian angel.

Recently, last night to be exact, I decided to give my guardian angel a name. I believe that if you ask to give a name to your angel, the Holy Spirit may inspire you a name.

During the day yesterday one particular name just happened to come into my mind. And I wasn’t even thinking about naming my guardian angel. Then last night I was continuing reading the book I have started reading: A Travel Guide to Heaven by Anthony DeStefano (which I bought here from Catholic Answers). The chapter which was upcoming was entitled: Chapter 7-Our Tour Guides. Anthony speaks about this very issue.

Unless the Church discourages the naming of our guardian angel, (with documental proof) I see nothing wrong with it and find this a trivial subject. At least I would like to have the spiritual security knowing that the angel assigned to me, who looks over my shoulder 24/7/365 for my entire lifetime will not be ignored by just saying ‘hey guardian angel’, but a spiritual friend who keeps me company when I am lonely and always have my back and guides me towards the ultimate reward to praise God in Heaven. Thank you Xavier.

Go with God!

Dear friend

Once a spirit is created, be it a human spirit or an angel, that spirit exists forever, for all eternity. God created a human spirit and for the earthly life of that human spirit, He gave each human spirit an angel spirit to guide and protect the human spirit. Both exist for all eternity and no-one retires! There is no end to the human spirit, it exists for all eternity either in eternal death and seperation from God, or in eternal life, through Christ Jesus, in heaven. There is no end to the angel, they continue for all eternity working for the Kingdom of heaven as so do we.

When we die and go to heaven, we are then as angels in heaven, Jesus said when questioned by the Pharisees in respect of who the woman would be married to in heaven after marrying her husbands brother etc as in Mosaic law, Jesus replied that there was no giving in marriage in heaven ‘they are as angels before God’ The human souls joins the company of angels in heaven in love and praise of God for all eternity.

So what happens when a soul goes to hell, I’d say that the angel and the human spirit are seperated then at this point and the angel returns to heaven. When a soul goes to purgatory, the angel goes with that soul to comfort and pray for that soul.

Jesus said legions of angels would be sent to Him if His Father so wished. The whole company of angels in heaven are there to work for us if we invite them as well as our Guardian Angel.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

:clapping: No retirement, no pension, no social security. Maybe they are permanently assigned to us???

Teresa 9,
Thank you for that well-written essay. May I say that one crux of my original post may have been overlooked?

I think that I said why does the Guardian Angel do after we are dead. You said they stay with a soul in Purgatory, and go to the band of Angels when the soul goes to Heaven…assuming no reassignment.

Someone said “no retirement”. no Social Security"…I liked that!

Here is a webpage about PADRE PIO and guardian angels.

I susspect the fate of G.A. are not Scriptual.

no, guardian angels do not retire, they are our friends forever. after death, if we are in purgatory, they bring us consolation and encourage us, there are some sources who say they bring us news of happenings among the still living. when we are finally free from purgatory, they accompany us to heaven and present us at the throne of God. Only then is their duty done, and they ‘retire’ as our guardians but remain as friends. from the book ‘all about the angels’ an old reprint from a book written in the 30s. very pious and enlightening.

certainly feels like they retire a bit prematurely some times, doesn’t it??? I suppose it could just be me…
