The more I think about the debate to name or not to name the Guardian Angel, the more silly this all seems.

My brother-in-law’s name is Doug. But his nickname is Butch.

My friend’s name is Michael, but his nickname is Sam.

I could go on, but nicknames often come from other people and it doesn’t change the people. And, when one is giving a name to their angel, it is only a nickname. I just smacks me as strange to think that such a beautiful, good creature could get upset by a child giving him a nickname. Or an adult for that matter.

How one addresses their guardian angel is another story. If someone were to give him a derogatory name or have bad intentions. then yeah, I’d say that is bad.

For some reason, I believe that a guardian angel is far more pleased with a person who talks to him daily by some nickname, affectionately given, than with those who rarely think of him throughout their lifetime. I can’t picture an angel too concerned with the nickname given him by a person, when the angel is likely more concerned with sins the person commits that he is working to help the person avoid. That can be a full time job when you factor in mortal and venial, as well as imperfections.

It is a simple way for a human to recognize their guardian angel. God did not have to become Man. But in so doing, he gave us a Human so we could better relate to Him, aside from his redemptive act among others. Imagine that…God “lowered Himself” and became Man. I’m sure an angel doesn’t mind “lowering” himself to aid someone in praying to him.

Hi Diane…what an insightful post and a beautiful one! Thank you… and my guardian angel, nicknamed ‘Pete’, thanks you too! I think to give one’s angel a name, albeit perhaps not his real name, brings one’s angel closer to one and in real affection…nicknames, kind ones, are a sign of affection coming from the heart not the head, leastways that’s how I see it.

smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_32_10.gif …thanks again Diane - one of those times in reading a Post where it crosses the mind “I wish I’d something like that”…and imitation (or desire to imitate) it is said is the highest form of flattery.

Barb:)

Thanks Barb.

I got snookered into some new age stuff, unwhittingly, in the Catholic Church. It was very subtle and would take decades to recognize what I was led into back then. Hence, I’m very concerned with any practice that could cause that.

It was a set of very orthodox, Catholic priests who suggested, from the pulpit that we give our guardian angels a nickname to make it easier to talk to him. It came on an enlightening talk on…Holy Angels.

I hardly see anything bad with a nickname given affectionately.

A few years back, I asked for a sign that would reveal my guardian angel’s name, and like a miracle, I heard it on the radio…

“My name is…my name is…my name is…Slim Shady” !

😃

Ok, bad joke.

I didn’t even realize that we all had a guardian angel for each of us until just recently. I find the whole concept fascinating.

I agree with both of these posts!!! I can’t believe my angel would possibly get his feelings hurt by my addressing him by any well intended name. In fact, I think most guardian angels aren’t ever addressed in any way. I think they would be very pleased to be thought of and given a name. My aunt calls me Cara mia, some people call me Care bear- I think it’s great!!!

Eminem is your Guardian Angel? :bigyikes:

Be afraid, be very afraid …

Well, it was a bad joke then, but an even worse one now, having been resurrected after 8 months…

In any event, I sometimes feel sorry for my angel. Watching me fumble and bumble at times, but being unable to do much in the way of direct influence…

I’m sure IF you gave your GA a name that he/she did not like they would let you know pronto with a swift swipe of their sword or swift kick in the rear… or maybe just let you suffer some minor mishap like stubbing your toe or avoiding that falling piano.

👍 Good point!!!

For many weeks now I have been praying to my guardian angel to reveal his name and other things to me. I still have had no response. Does anyone have any hints or tips on how I can form a close relationship with my guardian angel and find a way to communicate with him/her?
My guardian angel put the thought in my mind (or maybe it was just my idea!) to tell you that your guardian angel would like to be called Angel.

I suggest the guardian angel prayer. Don’t expect a lot of revealtion though.

You may be interested in the Opus Sanctorum Angelorum apostolate’s website, which has much information on the Holy Angels - that is what it translates to: Work of the Holy Angels.
I am about to send my application in to Opus Sanctorum Angelorum. Hopefully, it will be the first step on a long journey I am wanting to take.

I asked my guardian angel his name… evidently he has a sense of humor, besause the name Charlie popped into my head- definitely not a name I would have picked!

Remember “It’s a Wonderful Life” The angel’s name was Clarence.
