The more I think about the debate to name or not to name the Guardian Angel, the more silly this all seems.
My brother-in-law’s name is Doug. But his nickname is Butch.
My friend’s name is Michael, but his nickname is Sam.
I could go on, but nicknames often come from other people and it doesn’t change the people. And, when one is giving a name to their angel, it is only a nickname. I just smacks me as strange to think that such a beautiful, good creature could get upset by a child giving him a nickname. Or an adult for that matter.
How one addresses their guardian angel is another story. If someone were to give him a derogatory name or have bad intentions. then yeah, I’d say that is bad.
For some reason, I believe that a guardian angel is far more pleased with a person who talks to him daily by some nickname, affectionately given, than with those who rarely think of him throughout their lifetime. I can’t picture an angel too concerned with the nickname given him by a person, when the angel is likely more concerned with sins the person commits that he is working to help the person avoid. That can be a full time job when you factor in mortal and venial, as well as imperfections.
It is a simple way for a human to recognize their guardian angel. God did not have to become Man. But in so doing, he gave us a Human so we could better relate to Him, aside from his redemptive act among others. Imagine that…God “lowered Himself” and became Man. I’m sure an angel doesn’t mind “lowering” himself to aid someone in praying to him.
