I did not know when I married my husband that he is an alcoholic. We were married in a civil ceremony. He was not Catholic at the time. The alcoholism has destroyed both of our lives. This spring, he decided to come into the Church and accept the sacraments, but his alcoholic behaviors have not changed. Since I also suffer from very serious cardiac problems, I do not see how our marriage can continue. Can this marriage be nullified?

Dear friend,

You didn’t mention whether or not you did anything about that fact that your marriage was invalid because you are a Catholic who married outside of the Church. You need to get this all straightened out with your pastor. You are in our prayers.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
