I’m not 100% sure I’ve picked the right category for this! Apologies if it’s in the wrong place.

I’ll preface this by saying that I’m an Anglican, not (Roman) Catholic.
I like praying the rosary, and do so regularly. I’ve no issues with asking Mary, or any of the saints to intercede for me. The thing that puzzles me, theologically about some Marian prayers is when they ask things of Mary other than her intercession. I might be being pedantic, but when I pray to her, it is always to ask her to pray for whatever my intention might be, rather than to grant it herself, if that makes sense. Asking her to grant my request herself seems…wrong, like it’s forgetting that it is God who has the power to grant prayer. It seems to depart from the intercessory nature of prayer to Mary or other saints.

Am I just nit picking? Can anyone explain how it all works, theologically?
Bit confused!

Anything “granted” is by God and through her intercession, not by her independent of God.

I think you are hung up on English translations of medieval prayers. Language evolves, these prayers sound odd to modern ears. In the time and place they were written— not so much. Idioms, hyperbole, turns of phrase that made sense 500 years ago sound flowery and weird now.

(Shakespeare is kind of that way, too, and Shakespeare wrote in English of his day).

When we ask a saint to pray for us we are essentially asking them to help us. And as we ask others to help us with menial tasks in our lives and thank them for their service we priase and thank God for these good works because all good comes from God and God alone.

Peace!!!

1ke put it well in his first sentence. All things are granted by God. I look at it as shorthand; it may not be grammatically correct but that is what is meant when I ask for Mary to intercede for me.

before we comment, we should ask you to copy the particular part of the prayer in the thread, otherwise we are working blind on an answer
