I’m not American but I see that guns are considered quite important in the US. I know there is this 2nd amendment, and so people against gun control (republicans) say that gun control goes against this 2nd amendment, and the other side (democrats) say no it doesn’t, or yes it does but it doesn’t matter. Whatever. What I would like to understand is why gun control consisting in registration of guns would go against this 2nd amendment. If you are obliged by law to register your guns, but still allowed to keep and bear them, then what would be the problem? I’m honestly curious because I’ve seen those kind of arguments so many times on social media. I myself don’t have an opinion on the matter.

Because then the government knows you have a gun, for when they want to come and take it away and maybe throw you in prison.

The whole point of the 2nd Amendment is to prevent the government from taking your guns away in order to oppress you, since the government military forces will obviously still have all the guns they want.

Those of us whose ancestors came from countries where gun ownership was criminalized are pretty sensitive to this issue.

By the way, it’s not only “republicans” who are against gun control. I’m a Dem and I’ve never had much use for it.
