I have some friends who are very involved in end times prophecy, some from Catholic sources (alleged visionaries) and some from Hal and other separated brethren.

I am unable to break down by scripture things that have already happened, especially in Revelations. If someone is up to task, can you please utilize these scriptures the end times folks use, and break it down in Catholic form?

I know that as a Catholic, we are to focus on our relationship with Christ and not worry about the rapture or whatever, but I am ignorant as far as posing a discussion regarding the scriptures they present, which to them point to the anti-christ, a nuclear explosion, chips in the forehead or hand, Christ coming back and the rapture.

Can someone help me? I listed this question in ask an apologist last evening, but i don’t see it.

Thank you!

**hmm, no one wants to touch this one, huh? lol!

I thought it would be a breeze for some converts.** 😛

I saw that thread, but it doesn’t break down Revelations and the other scriptures that I need. It’s too, well–Catholic?? 😉

Might I HIGHLY recommend a book called “Rapture: The End Times Myth that Leave the Bible Behind” by David Currie? – I’m working my way thorugh it so I don’t want to speak with too much authority – suffice it to say that I was raised a rapture believing So. Baptist and am now trying to reprogram my brain away from this FEAR incentive of believing in Christ –

Basically – the Catholic church teaches an amillenial view of End Times – there is no secret Rapture – 99% of the stuff in Daniel and Revelations already happened in the years between Christ’s rising and the destruction of the Temple in 70ad – the anti-christ? Nero – people are waiting around for something that has already happened and are blinding themselves to this wonderful bit of prophesy that they COULD be using to further prove the prophesy and faith contained in the Bible.

This whole deal was dreamt up by some psychic named Darby and was believed by a guy named Scofield who then printed a Bible with this info in the footnotes – this was about 50 years ago – it’s all new thinking and most Christian religions do not hold this as doctrine –

please research it yourself or give me a few more weeks to become better versed!

Are you sure? It was my understanding that it came about in the 1800’s by some guy who kept predicting the end of the world on different dates (he was wrong every time…I think;)) and had something to do with the creation of the Seventh-Day Adventists.

I’m sorry I mean to say it gained popularity about 50 years ago – yeah I think it was dreamed up in the 1800s – ok I looked it up – it was 1883 when the Scofield’s “Reference Bible” took Darby’s ideas and spread them all over (Darby lived from 1800 to 1883) it spread slowly and while there were occasional people predicting the “End” throughout history they were rarely taken seriously by anyone until this new age of constant fear of some future tribulation that already happened …

I still have a lot of research to do before I can feel well versed in this topic but I’m very interested in having some long talks with my mother once I have my head straight!

Although not a book on end-times, a great deal of end-times discussion resides in the book.

“Salvation is From the Jews” Roy Schoeman.

controversal, but excellently written. Schoeman is Catholic…and Jewish.

The author of that book really knows his stuff. He did several interviews on CA Live and you can find them in the show archives.

Darby was influenced by a girl in Scotland who was allegedly having apocalyptic visions. He traveled several times to the US where he met Scofield. I believe that he also knew the founder of the Moody Bible Institute.

why in the world would you be looking for this type of a breakdown?

I’ll just say you should be extremely cautious of anything you get your hands on about this. There are alot of wacko’s out there that feed on this stuff, i’ve read alot of these prophecies, read one just yesterday, but it was kinda interesting, maybe i’ll post it below just to entertain. 😉

I bet from just events this year alone i could piece something together, now i’m not catholic, but i bet i could customize an ending to any faiths likeing. hehehe

If you could get a jehovah’s witness to talk to you, i bet they know alot about this end times thing, seeing as the watchtower has a history of crying wolf…

ok, i said enough

I remember I use to have a commentary by (Charles?) Barclay that broke down Revelations by what it meant to the people of the 1st Century to whom is was actually written. Perhaps you could call the CA apologists help line to get a good Catholic commentary.

I remember Hal Lindsey from the 70’s. Find some of his older works if you can. According to him and his ilk the world was supposed to have ended by now.

I largely find the end times stuff fruitless. The first end-time fanatics were 1900 years ago and each generation have a few that think this is it. And it is, for us at least, since eternity begins when we die.

The Navarre Bible has a good commentary of Revelation. It doesn’t go predicting the future though it is more historicst in content - what the Book mean to 1st century christian similar to the Barclay commentary but with a catholic bent.
And yeah Lindsay has been predicting this stuff was going to happen 5 years from now since the 1960’s. He all but guranteed it would happen in the 80’s hey I am still waiting. IF you can get ahold of his first edition books of the late great planet earth and read it you’ll notice many of his predictions failed to coem through and his timeframe of the 70’s and 80’s well they passed didn;t they.
Don’t by that book now though its all been updated to reflect current events and the old predictions all wiped clean. Hmm funny why did he do that. Look for the first edition at a used bookstore or on the web they must be on the 8th edition by now look for the 1st then read its a hoot.
