For Halloween, I was thinking that I’d make treat bags that have candy in them, of course, but also some kind of evangelization tool. The area that I live in is very new-agey, so I think putting some kind of Catholic material in the treat bag would be a good way to evangelize here. Do any of you have some advice on what I should put in the bag, though???

Ideas that I’ve though of include:
  1. All Saints’ Day coloring pages that invite the child to come to Mass at their local Catholic Church. I’m not totally sold on that idea though - I’m not sure a coloring page would be all that alluring.
  2. Catholic Kid’s CDs such at CatChat - they are expensive, though, so I couldn’t afford very many.
  3. Catholic Tracts - Almost no kids would read these, but their parents might
So I am open to any suggestions you may have, especially if you’ve done this before! Thanks in advance!!

Give out full sized candy bars (the giant sized ones if you can), gush over the costumes, then be the best witness you can for the rest of the year.

I’d have to go with this. Most folk view Halloween as ‘have fun, get candy’. If you’re the neighbor who pushes religious tracts on Halloween, you’ll likely get a reputation as ‘the weird religious freak who just can’t let Halloween be fun’, which would defeat your purpose.

Evangelize by being a good neighbor! Compliment the cute costumes, smile, hand out candy and non candy pencils, stickers, etc. (Teal Pumpkin Project is for kids with food allergies and medical issues that keep them from eating candy).

A few times over the years we have received religious material and the kids were always disappointed and threw it away. I doubt the parents would read it either and may even complain out loud to the children making it worse for your good neighbor evangelizaton.

Your heart is in the right place, but it would be a mistake to do anything like what you’re proposing. Don’t presume to evangelize other people’s children without their parents’ consent.

Yes! Having fun-non edible stuff for kids with allergies is a very good idea. And parents don’t have to deal with Halloween-binge tummy aches. 👍

Thank you everyone for your advice! I am going to take everything you all have said into consideration! 🙂
