My house faces southward. Most of the other houses in town don’t have icicles at their eaves, but I do. I had insulation installed in “this old house” 10 years ago, and it doesn’t seem to have stopped the snow from melting so fast to form icicles all along the front of the house. The roof slopes downward to the south.

On other houses, either the snow doesn’t melt at all, or it not only melts but evaporates. Why do I have one of the one-in-a-hundred houses that has icicles all along the rain gutter?

any ideas?

Sorry, not a handyman here…but just wondering are they long? Can they be a problem? (don’t get icicles here,so I have no idea)

Sounds like you still have a heat leak somewhere. Ask your utility company if they do free efficiency “check-ups.”

In the meantime, get thee to The Roof Rake Store. They have a mini-quiz to help you pick out the one that is the right shape for your roof. I recommend one with rollers so it doesn’t catch on the shingles.

What type of space is immediately under the roof? Living space or unheated attic/crawl space?

Come spring check your gutters and see if they need a good cleaning. It doesn’t take much to clog up their drainage fill with water and freeze up, and when you get a melt the gutters thaw out slowly so the water spills over and abracadabra you get icicles when the temps drops again.

Also the south sides of building catches most of the winter sun, in the Northern Hemisphere, and on bright day can melt some of the snow on that side.

Just some thoughts as there could be other reasons too.
