Can someone recommend a good book and/or other material to rebut the ideas put forth by Hans Kung, particularly in his book “The Catholic Church: A Short History?”

The best source would be Kung himself. As you may know, in 1979 Kung was banned from teaching as a Catholic theologian at Tubingen University because of his outspoken rejection of papal primacy and other key Catholic teachings. But on April 7th of 1998 Kung said he could no longer defend his past criticisms of the Church and Pope John Paul II, and that he is hoping for a reconciliation with the Holy Father.
I was at Borders yesteday and was a having a field day removing Kung AND Jung from the Catholic THEOLOGY section and placing those and other books in the Philosophy section directly behind me…I didnt start out doing that…I just didnt like seeing this stuff in the same section as Theresa of Avila, Padre Pio, Augustine etc…
Certainly Kung’s works of theology are in need of major correction; for example, his book denying the infallibility of the Church. However, I wasn’t aware there was anything wrong in his short history of Catholic Church. Is there a particular section that you are having trouble with?
I would recommend going to the website of the magazine “First Things”, which I believe is firstthings.com. Try “Hans Kung” in the search function. I don’t know if they have any extensive articles, but it does seem like a likely place to look.
