"Holy See’s Message to Hindus on Feast of Diwali
**“Reflection Inspired by the Tsunami”
**
VATICAN CITY, OCT. 25, 2005
Here is the message addressed by Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, to Hindus worldwide on the occasion of the feast of Diwali.
Diwali comes from the word “Deepavali” meaning “cluster of lights.” It symbolizes the triumph of truth over lies, of light over darkness, of life over death, of good over evil.
The three-day celebration marks the beginning of the new year; family reconciliation, particularly between brothers and sisters; and worship of God. This year, many will celebrate the feast on Nov. 1.
