Happy ending of a beatiful love story of a priest

Father Martino, Diocese Savannah, Georgia, USA

Martino got engaged with a lovely girl named Maria (unfortunately, I don’t have her picture :D). Everybody in the two families looked for a happy ending of their love story. Suddently, he discerned his vocation and decided to break up with her fiancee to pursuit priesthood.

He was ordained in June 05, 2004

The girl was deeply heartbroken, had a hard time to get over.

She finally graduated from a medical school, became a medical doctor and accepted God’s plan to her love life.

Up to now, Maria is still single and actively assists Father Martino, her former fiance, in his charity work.

Maria says: From now on, we do not live near each other, but I took a vow with myself not to remember the old memories anymore so that he is free to fulfill the duties of a priest. However, we still support each other, assist each other when needed with a sincere and genuine friendship. We pursuit different routes to serve other people. Each of us follow different directions: Martino is a priest and I am a doctor, two parallel lines. But we meet in a common ideology.

When I was still in my original country, a priest in my diocese used to put a photo of a girl on his desk. He said that she was his fiancee. They broke up so that he could pursuit priesthood. She then took a vow of chastity and remain celibacy to devote her life to charity work.

All the psych classes I took tell me she’s not really over him and hasn’t moved on, even if she thinks she has.
 
Beautiful story. The thread title is a little misleading…and scandalous.

Am i the only one that thinks is a bit strange for a priest to be displaying a photo of a fiancee,?

I want to update you the news - Dr. Vu had left her practice (as a Medical Doctor) and enter a Religious congregation and She is VERY HAPPY!

She told me of her decision “It has been 19 years since we know each other - I have been there to support you on your vocation - Now, I need your support!”

Please pray for her and for me so that we can be FAITHFUL SERVANTS!

Since you ask . . . first, if this arrangement works for these two persons, I am glad on their behalf and am glad that God has graced them with this gift.

Yet, in reading this post and other similar stories of a man leaving a special woman for the priesthood, I cannot help but wonder whether this is a lack of charity on his part. IMO, the sacrament of marriage seems underplayed as a vocation of perfect means to holiness in our faith. After all, it seems to be the more difficult vocation according to what I understand from scripture (e.g., 1 Cor. 7:28) and with more trials, graces increase.

I hope that I am not the only one experiencing a tug at the heart when reading this . . . .

Also, the sacrament of marriage seems to be God’s perfect plan for mankind because it was so in the beginning . . . . if one doubts this, please study Genesis chapter 2 and see if one concludes differently.

I have just contacted Father Martino directly. The poster named frmartio above is indeed Father Martino.

I am so glad with this new happy ending 👍

May God bless and protect the vocation of both Father Martino and Sister Nga Vu.

It is a little unusual, but understandable.

Remembering past companionship or memorable experiences can become a psychological tendency/need for a lot of people. I guess it serves as a reminder or mental cue of some sort for them.

Would you find it strange if a married couple displayed a picture of Jesus at their desk? They haven’t taken a vow of celibacy or decided to pursue God through ordination…
