Too many people are focusing on the questions about Uriel that were already answered, changing the double nature of this thread to just one about Michael and prayer to him.

I wanted to know why it is we can’t have someone like Michael as a Guardian Angel? He’s my favorite and most trusted angel in prayer. I don’t have direct miracles or stories about him, I just seems to trust him most out of the Archangels. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, are there documents about how to confidently pray about/to one’s guardian angel? I don’t fancy trying to just grab into the void per se, which is why I’d like Michael to be mine.

Anyway, thanks guys.

Why isn't Uriel an archangel? Spirituality
In some Orthodox Churches Uriel is considered an archangel or an angel. Why don’t Catholics think Uriel is also an archangel? :angel1:

I’ll take a look. This thread was half baked, I was more interested to know about St Michael, but, I also was curious about Uriel. Thank you.

That’s Raphael in Tobit. Uriel is revered as an archangel in Anglicanism and the Orthodox Churches.
I think it is a close call but ultimately the Church only accepts Archangels from the Canonical books.
Uriel is the main archangel in the book of
2 Esdras(4 Esdras in Vulgate and Douay Rheims) and has been in the Vulgate for centuries and is in the appendix of the Clementine Vulgate along with 1(3) Esdras and the Prayer of Manasseh. This could have been one of the reasons Uriel has been depicted in art in the Church through the centuries. I believe Uriel is in that painting Virgin on the Rocks.

Gotcha.

I generally have a hard time trusting Gabriel in prayer just because I don’t know him well or at all in canon. Raphael is also unknown to me other than what he’s known for so I guess it’s to be expected.

Without trying to cause too much trouble I was curious why Uriel isn’t listed. As far as I know; He’s an Archangel, and is depicted in Tobit. If I remember correctly that was supposed to be traditional Catholicism; according to my sources. I’ve not looked far, though. If there are more accurate and consistent sources I’d like to know.
The Latin Church does not recognise Uriel as an angel never mind an archangel.
It only recognises Michael, Raphael, Gabriel.

Hey so I’m updating my post because people seem to have read half of it and just posted about the “controversy”. I’ve changed the parameters of my questions, so if anyone has any insight I’d be grateful to hear from you, thanks!

We don’t choose our guardian angels the way one chooses a patron saint. But each one of us has a guardian angel that has been assigned, as it were, to us from birth. You can definitely trust your guardian angel - after all, God gave him the job. 🙂 It is also good to ask St. Michael the Archangel for his prayers.

There is the traditional prayer: “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.” There are also places that sell those little visor clips for your car with a prayer inscribed on them, asking your guardian angel to watch over you and all who travel in your vehicle.
While our guardian angel is our constant protector and watches over us, I think there may always be an element of mysteriousness about him, at least on this side of heaven; and that is perfectly okay. We can be confident that, whoever he is, our guardian angel watches over us and cares about us. It is rather amazing to think that God assigns one of His holy angels just to watch over each of us, isn’t it?

Actually, that’s incomplete. Here’s the full version of the traditional prayer:

Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom His love commits me here,
Ever this day (night) be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide.
From stain of sin oh keep me free
And at my death my helper be. Amen.

I used to say it the short way too. However, about 10-12 years ago on retreat the priest gave us the full version so I say that now.

Yeah I’ve been saying it the short way since I was a child. I’d like to know the origin of the extension; I’ll have to look it up.

If I remember right, he told us that the last two lines were removed so children wouldn’t be scared. Even pre-VII catechisms have the short version so you have to look for the full version.
