Great idea with a helper for each of us. We made a list last night of things we needed to do today and then divided them. I think doing as much on our own will make things go faster and most likely smoother. 😃

Also, on a personal note, remember to take it easy on yourself and your family. It’s stressful for everyone, but if you look at it as an adventure, it can be fun too.
Good luck!
Thanks and good luck on your move as well.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, I am taking notes lots and lots of notes. DH and I had a chance to talk last night and get more of a plan together so I am feeling better this morning and DH is going to contact a realtor today and get that process started. Hopefully we will be able to check a few things off the to do list today.

I have moved over a dozen times in my adult life, and the last time I moved, I numbered my boxes. All I wrote on the box itself was the number in large print. But I kept a list of everything I put into each box, and at the end of each day’s packing, I transferred that info to a spreadsheet, in alphabetical order. I knew when I packed that I would be making two moves within a year, so I didn’t even unpack many of the boxes. But a few times when I needed to find something which was packed away, all I had to do was open the spreadsheet and find out which box it was in. This took a bit more time at the outset, but was well worth it later on.
This is exactly what I did when we moved DH 18 hours to my community. We moved very quickly and I didn’t think we would have time to look at every box and wonder what was in it - nor write contents on each box.

Each box has a number, and I have a master list with box number and contents. When we stored his items, like numbers were stored together - it was easy to know where to put stuff cuz ā€œboxes 23-35 came from the kitchen etc.ā€ so this is also in the line of thinking to pack according to the room they came from.

Since much of his things are still in storage (my home is very small too) it makes it easy to find things when he goes to the storage shed to find something.

Another bonus, is the boxes are more efficiently reusable… no more scratching out the previous contents to write the new! Just rewrite a number or use the one thats on there already.

Good luck! And grats to your family on your husbands new employment.

Well DH got the job!!! 😃 So now we start the moving process. Any advice on how to move efficiently? I don’t even know were, or how to start, everything seams so very overwhelming right now.:bigyikes: DH is on cloud 9 which but I go from being really happy to really sad to terrified to excited to just overwhelmed about every 15 minutes. I have about 3 weeks to move 4 hours away to an apartment we still need to find, put a house up for sale in a market that stinks, and convince my mom that 4 hrs isn’t that far and that we will still see each other. I think I am going to have to buy some wine on the way home tonight!!!
CONGRATS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!

Ok…I just moved to Florida about 5 months ago…wow, can’t believe it’s been that long! Here is my advice:

If you can afford it, have someone pack with/for you. That would have helped us immensely. But, if it is all on you both…
  1. give give give to Goodwill as much as possible
  2. place in the paper anything you might want to sell…appliances, workout equipment, etc…
  3. have a garage sale
  4. mark all boxes and make sure they are organized (I can’t believe I packed Halloween stuff in with some of our toiletries) šŸ˜›
  5. take time out for yourselves…each day. Don’t spend 8 hours per day packing…because it will take its toll.:o
  6. PRAY
Good luck to you!!!

LOL–and didn’t discover this until now, we are putting up Halloween decorations and I’m like…oh, that’s where my nail polish remover was!😃 Happy packing! It’s a stinky job, but once you make the move, it’s allll worth it!

Congrats!!!
What I would suggest is to also go to the grocery stores for boxes. Ask someone and they will send you to the back for all you want. I would check the boxes over. Not all their boxes are good for packing. I have found some really good ones at grocery stores though.

I second the U-Haul. My dss used one when he moved into his apartment about 7 months ago. The smallest one was $25 a day.

If you have plain white tissue paper, you can also use that to wrap stuff up in. DO NOT use printed or colored paper. You risk having the print or color come off onto the item it’s wrapped in. Especially if the item does not get unpacked immediately upon arrival. This is one reason I do not recommend using newspaper. Had that experience! I have an ivory colored kitty that is now yellow on one side.

I like the number system, that’s a very good idea. šŸ‘

I hope you move goes as smoothly as possible. šŸ™‚
