Happy Saint Patrick’s Day, marking the profound legacy of the patron saint of Ireland. How will you be celebrating this wonderful feast day with your family and friends? Any special prayers or stories that mark the day in your household? Do you play Celtic music throughout the day? If so, what do you listen to? Make crafts with your children? What will you serve for dinner? Does your diocese have a special dispensation for this feast day that will allow you to serve corned beef and cabbage (which my Irish mother claims is the food of peasants and that in her home, only the finest foods were served on Saint Patrick’s Day, the dinner was a meal comparable to Thanksgiving). Thank you in advance for your gracious replies. And may the Great Saint Patrick, without whom I probably wouldn’t be here, be with you and those you love throughout the day! And don’t forget to wear something green!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you too. We don’t get a dispensation here in Japan for St. Patrick’s day.
Corned beef and cabbage seems to be an American custom. I’ve never eaten it and I grew up in Ireland. Sometimes we had trout and often we had lamb for dinner. My favourite was trout stuffed with shrimp. We usually had smoked salmon with scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast.
We went to 9am Mass (St. Patrick’s Day is a Holy Day of Obligation in Ireland and it is also a National Holiday) . 9am Mass was in Irish and the priest blessed large bowls of shamrock. For the younger children, parents usually bought them a St. Patrick’s Day badge and the priest would bless them too.
After Mass we drove to the city (Cork) to watch the parade. We loved having a day off school, watching the parade and the delicious food.
My father used to finish the day by reading St. Patrick’s Breast-Plate to us (only the Christ be with me, Christ within me, section when we were very little but gradually more and more). As we got older (teenagers) we used to read The Confession of St. Patrick too.
Before my parents went to bed they used to have a hot toddy made from either Jameson’s or Bushmills Irish Whiskey.

😃 😃 I love St. patrick’s day! I’m Irish on my mom’s side and when goofy customers come into the store and talk about lepracons and other silly things that have nothing to do with the good saint, I tell them how much I love the man because he brought my ansisters the Catholic faith! they usually shut up after that. I’ve got a cute pin with a wannabe emerald heart and it says “irish” on it and I"ll wear it on my unaform today.

why did st. patrick drive the snakes out of irland?
because he was too poor to fly them out
why do people wear sham rocks on st. patrick’s day?
because real rocks would look even more silly
why can’t you ever barrow money from a lepracon?
because they’re always a little short (I wanna laugh like shreck when I tell that joke)
how did the irish jig get started?
too much beer and not enough bathrooms
where did green beer come from? who cares! just keep it comming!!! 😃

Unfortunately, I’m only Irish on my Dad’s side. So, I’d better keep it to half a pint.

(just kidding–I’m a teetotaler)
 
My husband and I both have 100% Irish blood coursing through our veins. We went to Ireland for our honeymoon and stayed with relatives on the Dingle Penisula and near Kilkenny. Our 6 kids all have the same pure Irish genes. Our family has a party every year to celebrate the great St. Patrick and we keep in mind his profound effect on the world. If he hadn’t converted the pagans of Ireland, there would be far fewer Catholics in the world. This year at our party, we will have a young lady who will play the bagpipes, and a friend will play songs on the piano while we all sing Irish tunes. It’s lots of good clean fun. Happy St. Pat’s day!
 
Oooh Theresa, I wish I could come over to your house today! Your party sounds fabulous. And thanks to everyone else for all the wonderful replies.

We read the Breastplate of St. Patrick at breakfast, where we ate yummy green muffins. And I gave each of my children a green scapular to wear for the day, no pinching allowed around here. I’m planning on green milkshakes this afternoon. And then I’m out of ideas. My husband is out of town and I’m exhausted to boot.

Anyway, thanks again for the links, prayers, and ideas!
