That’s right-his father’s name was Calphurnius, a Roman official who may have become a deacon later, and his mother’s name was Conchessa who may have been a slave in his household.

So when the young Patrick was carried away by slave traders to Ireland, he found out by painful experience what it was like to be a slave.
I just love his story. He’s the Patron of my ancestral homeland. I kinda miss having an Irish surname, after getting married. Oh, well, my middle name is still Irish.

I didn’t really do anything to celebrate other than acknowledging that it was, in fact, St. Patrick’s Day. There were a few folks in the city centre waving some Irish flags about but no other festivities that I could see.

The evening concluded with a few incomprehensible text messages on my mobile from several American friends who were out celebrating on a grander scale. 😉

I celebrated my national day by going to Mass (it’s a holy day of obligation here in Ireland) and suspending my—rather meagre anyway—Lenten penance. Otherwise, practically nothing.

Watching the parade would have been unbearably tedious, and I’m not the type to go out partying. 🙂

Good for you–’'going to Mass" is the best honour you can give to St.Patrick

I always maintain that many Irish expats are more Irish than the Irish!!

I note this with the Polish community–they maintain a fervour in exile, talk still like peasants(which they were) ;when they go back for the first time, like my dad after 30years–they are surprised that “things are different”! But that is just human nature–we only see that we are getting “old” by looking at our friends–my,my “how OLD do they look”! (that is apart from memory loss–others that is!) Go the Irish–when Irish eyes are smiling–😃 you can hear the angels sing–or something like that—God and St.Patrick–what more do we need!
I went to a College dedicated to him and believe it or not was taught by the Christian Brothers–they were hard, tough ,manly bunchand mostly good religious --they had to be to teach in overcrowded schools.God Bless them all.
