I’m in formation for the permanent diaconate, and while at the seminary last week I noticed that someone had left a hard bound version (Vol 2) of the Liturgy of the Hours in the sacristy. I opening it up as I had never seen a hard bound one (it had a red plastic cover on it that was removable) and noticed that it was published by the Catholic Book Publishing company and looks identical to my soft bound 4 vol set, other than the fact that it was hard bound.

Does anyone know when these had been sold? I hate to admit this, but I like to get some of the different versions of the Christian Prayer books and the like, so this piqued my interest. Not sure if they can even be found anymore as most searches that I did didn’t tell me if the book was soft bound or hard bound. I wish I knew who’s book it was as I would ask them.

@Spyridon, Well, it looked to have a plastic cover over it, but who knows, maybe someone stuck some wood between the face of the book and the plastic cover to make it feel like a hard bound book. I didn’t want to take the cover off as it was not my book.

@(name removed by moderator), the one I saw had red on the side and not gold, so I don’t think it was the leather ones (and I am fairy certain those have a flexible cover)

I’m not sure why.

That’s the black leather series.

I searched high and low for hardcover LOTH - it appears it doesn’t exist anymore.

OP: either the hardcover volume you found is an older edition no longer in print, or it’s a custom rebinded hardcover.

I’m sure it was an older edition (it looked quite old). Possibly you are correct it was a custom rebind. I’ve had to do that once already.

As mentioned up-thread, getting a good, long-lasting rebinding in hardcover may be your best bet.

Yes @FrDavid96

Only leather-type covers on there.

I’m 99% sure that what the OP encountered was either a very old volume that hasn’t been in print for years or decades even, or a custom rebound hardcover.

That very well may be the case

Not looking for a rebind Max… just more of a curiosity. Possibly someone who was a priest/religious back in the middle 1970’s who may have seen one of these might come across this and know.

Just phone the publisher and ask if the ever did publish it, and if they have any old stock. I once bought a book from them that had been long-removed from their catalog. They just happened to have a few still on the shelf unsold.

It can’t hurt to call and ask.

Well, I was at the seminary for class last night and I took a look at the book again. It is a normal softbound Vol 2 of the LOTH just like you can buy now, but it had a special slip on cover that had a hard board in it or something. I guess there was not a hard bound edition of the book. Makes sense as I like the books to flex. In fact, I love when you find one that has been around the block a few years and is nice and flexible. Much easier to hold.

The cover that it had on looked very similar to this one, only it was the red one and for Lent/Easter not advent.

This may be what you are referring to. The Leaflet Missal 2018 Spring Supplement catalog, page 32, lists a large print LOTH with hard shell slip case, only $255 (yikes!) Item #24103.

No, that’s not it. That is the box that the books come it. It can double as a book holder for all the books. That would be all four of the large print books and the hardboard holder. The blue cover that I posted above is what I had seen, only the one I saw was for the lent/Easter season.
