I have a slight dilemma. Now some people may scoff at the idea of my bringing this most personal of decisions to an internet forum but I say that I am appealing to many voices / opinions and have come to conclude that this forum is always a purveyor of good advice.

I am looking to hire a part-time plus baby sitter i.e. nanny. However this nanny is not a live in or even a full timer but we expect her to be around for 30 hours or so per week.

We’ve interviewed several and yet have not found a suitable candidate. A few were known smokers of tobacco. Another was a casual drinker. And a third did not have solid references.

But above all – we have been disappointed in the unorthodoxy of any of these nannies. Part of our screening is a test of basic Catholic doctrinal and dogmatic litmus tests. We are very concerned that our in-home help believe in the Real Presence, oppose abortion in ALL instances and maintain Marian devotion or regular Rosary.

So does anyone have any suggestions as to what they would look for and/or where they’d look for it???

Are there any pro-Catholic organizations that help place good folks, solidly grounded in the Faith for this need?

Since you mentioned that catholicism is one of your criteria, I’m presuming that you’re advertising in your parish bulliten, as opposed to the local newspaper, right? Spreading to the other parishes in your vincinity may be of use, as well as putting an ad in the diocesean paper.

Depending on where you live, you may have a good Catholic college or high school in your area (depending on how old of a person you’re looking for). You can try putting up flyers at the school, or advertising in their school paper. I’ve seen some nanny positions listed in the off-campus job listings at some colleges as well, so you may be able to contact their Career Services department as well.

Second the suggestion of Parishes.

Many Fundamental groups (Baptists for example) hold your views on social drinking, however, they would not be likely to share Catholic spiritual beliefs. Perhaps noting in your advertisment what you do and don’t require would pre-screen for you?

Hope you find the right person.

Pray that God will help you select a Catholic sitter.

I prayed and have been in a bad spot for some time. I attend Adoration frequently. One day after Adoring, I started chatting with this lady I saw often at Adoration. Come to find out that she was a grandma, unemployed, and down on her luck too.

After several weeks of chatting, God put it in my heart to ask to if she wanted to work part time for me…and thus a great sitter was found!!! She comes to my house and has eased my burden.
God is great!

Another was a casual drinker.
What’s wrong with that?

jrabs brings up a good point–be prepared to look “outside the box”. Going with an older person has many benefits.

*What’s wrong with that?*Alcohol poisons the mind and soul. Christ could drink alcohol only because he had a perfect body / mind / soul which we will get at the Resurrection (God willing).

There is no prohibition against drinking alcohol.

If you want to fing a non-drinker that’s fine, but I don’t think there a religious argument from a Catholic point of view that says a person can enjoy a glass of wine with her dinner.

That’s not exactly proper theology. Fully God, but also fully man. as man if Jesus would have not drank in moderation then he would have sinned. we know he was without sin, so we know that drinking in moderation is not sinful. To say that his divinity would protect his body form the effects of alcohol, would be saying that he was not also fully human.

But that’s another thread.

With regards to finding a sitter:
You can poop in one hand and wish in the other and see which gets filled up first.

My point is you won’t find the perfect person, everyone has flaws. And depending on the situation more harm may be coming from not having a sitter at all than from having an imperfect one. Balance, everything in moderation. So actually bring up the alcohol was a good idea 🙂

If you are willing to pay enough money, you can get someone with whatever qualifications you want. You’re not just looking for help, your looking for a super-bargain. Ever hear the saying " You get what you pay for ? "

Well, you are the person making the decision, not me. But if I were in the market for a nanny, I would first look for someone who is loving, caring, kind, honest and trustworthy and her specific religion would be secondary. You might find somebody who believes in all the dogma you are quoting but who is terrible with children. What if she prays the rosary but doesn’t click with the kids? What is more important?

you might try looking through a national nanny agency…or placing an ad online…there are many nanny websites…

i was a nanny in early college and all my families found me through one particular national agency. families can usually specify exactly what their wants are, incuding certain religious preferences.

Would you consider someone with a daycare provider license? I have daycare, a neighbor with in-home licensed daycare. If you have enough children, it might worth while to have this option for the daycare provider to come to you.
