For those of you who have not read the books or seen the movie “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, I won’t try to spoil much.

There is sufficient evidence in the “Prisoner of Azkaban” that Harry Potter is Catholic. No, he doesn’t make the sign of the cross or pray the rosary, and yes, he still is a wizard, but I think that he is Catholic in light of this information.

Am I crazy or do others who have seen the film or read the books think so also?

If you are referring to his ‘godfather’, note that other non-Catholic Christian religions have godparents, too. Anglicans (Church of England) also have infant baptism, and have godparents…I suspect this is the background J.K. Rowling had in mind when she wrote the story. Aside from that denomination, if I’m not mistaken, the mainline protestant churches (Lutheran, for example) also have infant baptism.

I saw it as an encouraging story tidbit, too! Hope springs eternal…at least they imply that he believes in God, and also Christ (via baptism).

I just remebered: his godfather says that at birth, his (Harry’s) parents chose him as godfather. Unless there are Protestant denominations that celebrate infant baptism, he (Harry) would almost have to be Catholic.

I thought it was interesting that his wizard parents had him baptized and also they celebrated Christmas and I believe Easter.

I’ve also wondered about HP’s religion since reading the 1st book. I think its weird how they celebrate Christmas and Easter, yet no mention of these holidays as something other than “traditions” is made. Also, I noticed that there is no mention of Jewish, Muslim, etc. kids at the school. There is also no church or anything. 😉 But if family size is an indicator of anything, I’d have to agree that the Weasley’s are Catholic. 😉
