Harry Potter: harmless or dangerous

I’ve read the discussion on Pokemon and other like games. I’d like to hear other Catholics opinions on Harry Potter. I’m sitting on the fence, thinking it’s a harmless kids series, but not comfortable enough to let my children get engrossed with it. Does such controversial material belong in a Catholic school library?
 
Please do a search on the forum as this topic has been beaten to death already.

yea, cut her a little slack 🙂 A moderator could always merge this with a more recent HP thread, and then no harm done.
 
I happen to think it’s all good enjoyable fun and fantasy-------not to be taken too seriously --the “witchcraft” element or whatever. You just tell your children it’s all pretend, etc…

My kids loved the movies----so did I!!!
 
I haven’t read the books but the Harry Potter movies are great fun. I voted Harmless.
 
Watched two of the movies. Tried to read the first book with my son. My choice between harmless or dangerous? I choose boring, which isn’t quite harmless nor exactly dangerous.

My kids thought they were a great fantasy and looked forward to the next book to come out. I think it’s great when children look forward to reading a book.

I certainly haven’t seen any harm from the books or the movies. I vote harmless.
 
The best analysis I saw astutely idintified the difference between those who support Harry and those who fear him. Those who have real life experience with the occult (either through ministry, police work, or family or friends who joined the occult) won’t go near Harry, those who have no experience with the occult see no harm in it. I won’t go near it. I much prefer Narnia, and Lord of the Rings.
 
My parents thought they were harmless and let my younger sister (now 11) read the books and watch the movies. By book 5, they noticed that she was becoming obsessed and her behaviour and attitudes were being negatively affected by Harry Potter. The books and movies were taken away to be hidden and we were advised never to even talk about HP again. I wouldn’t say Harry Potter is harmless, at least not for all kids.

DITTO!!!

I admit I fall under the category of people who have had encountered the occult, and I see no reason to have my kids get involved with Harry Potter. One isolated movie or book isn’t a big deal, but this is a string of book after book and movie after movie, it really gets kids hooked. Personally, I can think of hundreds of other things I’d rather get my kids hooked on. I don’t think of it as some horrible evil, but I just don’t think my family needs to get involved in the whole Harry Potter craze. We have all the Lord of the Rings movies (and the book). That satisfies their yearning for fantasy. Narnia is great. I am happy that my daughter likes the Dear America books. My kids don’t suffer for entertainment just because I reject the Harry Potter genre.

no love–just facts–the books are insipid. All five…soon to be six–just recycle the same stupid plot…Vol–uh…I mean he-who-must-not-be-named is attacking and only Harry can stop him (AGAIN). Let’s learn to use magic (which is forbidden to Christians) while Rowling paints all the normal people in unflattering shades of stupidity.

You know the old saying–welfare moms tell the best stories.

There are literally 1000s of great kid books out there so why 1) let your kids read garbage like Potter and 2) why would any adult admit to reading Potter at all?
 
…as I have said before and will say again…harry potter is only a danger to children who’s parents would never frequent a board such as this…
 
Don’t worry about Harry Potter parents I hear the bigger problem is that Sponge Bob and Tinky Winky are flaming homosexuals!
