You’ll get a variety of opinions.

My opinion: It’s a fun, fanciful children’s tale.

Harry Potter is a Christian allegory. It’s not a spectacularly good bit of writing but it’s at least interesting.

If it doesn’t lead you into sin, there’s no sin in it. Harry Potter isn’t sinful in itself.

Stop watching Sensus Fidelium. Just stop. and stop recommending it. You see downright terrible comments on the Divine Mercy (of all things!) and on a wonderful story about St. John XXIII interceding for a nun with a deadly stomach problem. The Priests themselves on that channel are terrible speakers, overblown deliveries. Fr Ripperger is the best but he’s only passable, and he tosses some right wing nonsense around – I mean nonsense that happens to be right wing if anything. He thinks the Virgin Mary appears standing on a half moon because something about Islam. Seriously, read Saints or get more Rosaries in, but Sensus Fidelium isjust a dangerous timewaster. Just let that channel die. The guy who runs it keeps his nose clean but he allows scandalous comments.

Harry Potter is great! There is too much truly “wrong” in this world to waste any time worrying about fiction.

Some here will insist that it is inspired by the Occult, invokes the names of real demons, and lays out a step by step guide for casting real spells. These people have never been able to convince me that they have even a superficial knowledge of the actual text.
The author, Rowling, has explicitly stated that real world witchcraft / Wicca has no place in her fictional world. She has explicitly stated that her Christian roots did inspire much of the imagery… the Christian allegorical elements of the seventh book hit you like a brick wall: in an ultimate act of love, Harry lays down his life for his friends, rises from the dead, and defeats the Dark Lord. Scripture is quoted more than once. Dumbledore speaks of seeking “refuge” in Harry’s mother’s “blood”…

No. It’s not bad. There is no such thing as a real
life magic spell.

Harry Potter is a diabolical and evil ploy to turn people to evil. Just look at the children’s quotes from this very informative article: Harry Potter Books Spark Rise In Satanism Among Children

And if that isn’t bad enough for you already, here’s the personal experiences of someone who tried to make Harry Potter and DnD spells work with the catastrophic results that followed: The Escapist - Spellcasting 101

So it’s like, totally evil.

/sarcasm off (though I do recommend reading the second one fo’ shizzle)

Some people don’t like how it has spells in it. They say it ties to real magic. The things ignored however are
  1. The spells aren’t real. They’re fake Latin-sounding words.
  2. Part of the reason magic is a sin for us is because it uses recourse to demons and is a sin of pride to go beyond what God gave us. In Harry Potter, magic comes from the person (no demons) and is an innate part of the wizard’s nature. (no pride)
  3. People with a grip on reality aren’t going to think it’s real.
So I don’t see anything wrong with liking Harry Potter so long as your other duties get done. (And I don’t have any hint that such is a problem for you.)

Though in regards to fantasy, I will recommend David Eddings’ The Belgariad. It’s a series of five awesome books followed by another series of five even better books called The Malloreon. (Tokein and C.S. Lewis are givens of course.)

I also found the Wizard in Rhyme series to be interesting and I was a big fan of Terry Pratchet’s Discworld in my middle and high school years.

Was the first article for real or was it a joke?
The Onion is a satirical online paper. So no.

But it has been cited as a source by people who were serious about saying Harry Potter is evil.

It is entertainment and there is nothing wrong with it unless you don’t remember that is not real, but get involved in it as some kind of spiritual portal.

Harry Potter is evil. He leads people to Universal Studios instead of Walt Disney World, resulting in countless disappointing family vacations.

I think that Harry Potter stories have dark undertones which romanticise dark forces, and that’s why it has been so popular. It appeals because it’s scary and sinister and makes light of evil mischief. Our innate senses of concupiscence are enthralled by it.

The author has not simply used some general knowledge of Christianity but also elements from almost everything else, mythology, fairy tales, Tolkien, C S Lewis, you name it. On the backs of giants.

The only positive I can see in her books is that it gives an otherwise uninitiated audience a sense of the mystery which surrounds us, the germ of an idea about spirituality. The main character also has a lameness about him which undermines the concept of the innocent hero.

These stories are inspirational but do not beckon towards God.

The best and safest source of information about the spiritual should be searched for in the scriptures.

(And that is my po faced opinion.)

No, not at all. It’s fiction, and it has very good themes of friendship, loyalty, and doing the right thing even when that’s the hardest thing.
Contrary to the rumors sometimes spread, the “spells” are all made up.

I’m not into Harry Potter all that much bu I have to say its amazingly well done at Universal. I was severely disappointed in Magic Kingdom/Epcot at Disney World because it was a tired and confusing mishmash of animatronics, shoehorned rides and oddly flashy new things.

Universal seemed much better upkept—even the older rides like ET.

I only spent a day at each by generosity of family employed there a few years ago, but I would say Universal park pass over Disney any day.

If Father Ripperger - says it’s evil - and Rowley dabbles with the Occult
I put my money on - what he says - NOT Hollywood.
