Harry Potter?

My story above comes from People magazine.

I can’t find these stories on regular news sites that report the story in an unbiased fashion.

Drugs, divorce, bullying all have infinitely stronger influences on a child’s mind.

Much, much, much stronger than anything one Harry Potter book could accomplish on a child from a stable background with no history of drug use.

I would say that it wouldn’t even be a drop in the bucket compared to what drug use could do.

Find me a story that states books and only books like Harry Potter have had a negative influence to such a point that it inspired the child to commit murder.

Besides…you haven’t given any reference or link to the news story you claimed to have seen/heard.

It isn’t wise to reference stories that don’t exist or you heard about through a third party.

If you read about it…find it so we can read about it too.

I highly, highly doubt it happened.

Stories like that are meant to instill a truly false sense of fear in order to teach a moral lesson.

If you can’t reference it then you shouldn’t be claiming it to be true and using it to lecture the people who have read Harry Potter and plan to read it to our children.

A story like that…one that includes a murder of several family members over something controversial like the content of books or video games would make headlines across the nation and at least at a regional level.

It shouldn’t be too hard to find and create a link for.

Our “feelings” aren’t what’s important. What happens to our children is! And since when does one have to “reference” everything we have read and heard. I’d like to see you do that!!! Many professionals have warned against Harry Potter’s influence on our kids.We have been warned over and over again about the influence many things going on in our society, has on our children, including video games, movies, music, BOOKS etc. and they have made the headlines!! Yet to many parents cannot or will not see the danger. Now reference that!!! God Bless, Memaw

Real life situations such as the ones Kelfa pointed out will do more damage than a fictional series with magic in it ever will.

JK Rowling is a Christian. You can clearly see Christian imagery in the last book. Has Harry Potter ever led to someone murdering someone else? I doubt that highly, and if such a thing has ever happened, it indicates a much larger problem than reading a series of books.

Books about real life and fiction are very different. Just because someone reads about magic does not mean they will try it. No one reacts to things like others do we are all different. I knew the magic in that book when I was a kid was fake. There is no way its real and it never will be. Some kids get carried away but not all do.
 
I can’t remember if I’ve told this story on this thread already or if it was a different HP thread, since the topic has a habit of popping up over and over again, but perhaps it bears repeating:

Not that long ago a bunch of friends were raving about a novel by a Catholic author with Catholic themes. It was a love story but not trashy, and apparently the writing quality was quite good.

I read the book, and it was definitely a near occasion of sin for me. I should not have read it. Now, there were many very, very good things in this book. But due to some of the content, it was not good for me. I have not mounted a campaign against the book, or torn it down, or declared it immoral. I just know it wasn’t a good thing for me to read. I can see why my friends liked it and it’s possible it could have provided an opportunity for spiritual growth for them, even.

Is it possible that HP could be dangerous to some people. But I think that’s because of what they bring with them to the text. If a child is already interested in the occult, or has an unhealthy attachment to fantasy, perhaps it would not be wise to let him read. But that’s not because of any inherent danger in the text. Some people can’t go into an art museum and view nudes without thinking lustful thoughts. That doesn’t turn the nudes into pornography. 🤷
