Favourite Band due to their lyrics?

It seems many Catholics here are listening to bands which are plain anti-Christian. Shouldn’t we sacrifice listening to these bands for the glory of God?

Yours, a sinner, John

I don’t find it a sacrifice. I just don’t feel as much interest for these songs anymore. For example, songs were the point of the song is to wallow in selfpity like (“weak and Powerless”–A Perfect Circle)

It depends on how stupid the song is. If it’s something I can just laugh at, I don’t see much of a problem. But if it raises my blood pressure, then I turn it off.
I quit playing for a band that wanted to sing anti-christian lyrics. You gotta do what you gotta do.

I stop financially supporting bands when they starting “preaching” at me about politics or bashing religion. I was a big fan of local music, but it’s gotten very hard to go to local shows when every performer thinks they need to become an activist.

there are certain songs that I turn off or did listen to, but I haven’t thrown away a whole group of music over it.

I prefer classical music, but when driving it is usually easier to find oldies/classic rock (anything pre-disco). But driving home from a Steubenville Summer Conference, after all the praise and worship music and beautiful liturgies with music by the TORs, I found myself completely unable to listen to my favorite oldies station, or to the tapes I had in the car-Clapton, Bob Seegar, Janis Joplin etc. I simply could not bear to listen to either the words or music.
I also cannot listen to a lot of 20th century music I used to like, like Shostakovich (sp?), Carmina Burana, and the like.

NPR only plays classical music a few hours a day, the rest of the time I have the Christian station on (Catholic station only has a range of a couple of miles), but only in the hours they play “kindler gentler” praise music. I don’t like the contemporary rock styles, groups that sound like hip hop or lounge music. Why do most female Christian singers sound like Celine Dion or Jennifer Lopez?

I have taken to keeping a CD of Taize in the player for times there is nothing else to listen to.

I won’t buy anything by Sarah McLaughlin, for example, after I heard her in an interview locally before a concert. She said that she donates proceeds from her concerts to the local chapters of Planned Parenthood in the cities she plays to promote “abortion rights”.

I used to listen to an oldies station back when we lived near Baltimore (and I was a SoBap), but I quit, 'cause I just couldn’t see going up in the Rapture with “Louie Louie” still ringing in my ears. 😛

yep… me too. Gave her up - which is too bad because I did enjoy her music.

I know what not to listen to. But I do love music and I do try to find new artists. What are some really good recommendations ? Im open to any genre except hip-hop, rap, or heavy metal. (I find that music much to aggressive sound-wise if not lyric-wise.)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. 🙂

I’m not listening to much contemporary music anymore either. I didn’t really give it up, as it just sort of never suits my mood anymore. I tried Christian radio for a awhile, but I find a disturbing amount of protestant evangelizing, and preaching. I find it is more a cult of personality, with the preacher at the center.

I too am looking for some good Christian music. I like “Above All” by Michael Smith, if you’ve heard that. Most of the stuff is rather drab, like the above post, who likens it all to Celin Dion. They remind me of boy bands and girl bands, with all the music containing words like “love, always, eternal, for you, blah blah”, except that is replaced with words like “love, always, worship, praise, for Him, blah, blah.” - but at least the album covers are not covered with skin.

I have had to give up about 85% of the music I used to listen to. It is frustrating because I loved to sing and dance to some of it, but my conscience wouldn’t let me, I could not longer ignore the lyrics or social/political platforms.

My personal feeling is that I really don’t like Christian music (no offense), I just can’t get in to it-and I have really tried.

So, I listen to talk radio mostly and classical with my hubby.

I find myself listening to older music (Dean Martin, Sinatra, etc.) The lyrics are much better and they can actually carry a tune! There aren’t really any stations around here that play those songs full time, so I end up listening to CD’s more than the radio at home.

I have, but it happened slowly and unexpectedly. I used to like NIN for one and now I can’t stand to listen to it, I was listening to Janes Addiction the other day and had to turn off “Been caught stealin’” I can’t even listen the more mild musicians like Sheryl Crow anymore! I’m not an overscrupulous person, It’s just when I hear questionable lyrics now my skin crawls and I have to listen to Catholic-friendly music. It was truly a strange feeling when I coudln’t jam out ot Been caught stealin’ one of my all time favorite songs from highschool/college days. There are even old country favorites I can’t stand to listen to anymore! (I have a wide range of music tastes.)

Yep same here, but I have found some good Christian bands, I always felt the same way about Christian music, but I found some I actually like!

Just please promise me you’ll actually listen to some of Smitty’s music that he actually wrote - almost nothing on his two worship albums was written by him, while almost everything on his regular albums is (and he’s tied with Rich Mullins in my book for best songwriter of all time)

I don’t expect everyone to love Smitty’s music - but I do have to chime in anytime I ever hear anyone who sounds like they’ve only heard his worship albums (I own all 16 or 17 albums he’s got out - been a fan of his since I was in 4th grade =)

Now I’m not sure exactly what the Catholic opinion on his music would be though - its very “non-denominational” to me in the sense that it isn’t offensive to any protestants, but I don’t know enough about Catholicism yet to know the Catholic view of it…

Yep, I can’t even stand to listen to her music anymore. I used to be a bit of a fan and have several albums. It makes me sick.

I myself have been a very big fan of the band Tool (who share a vocalist with A Perfect Circle). Tool is unabashedly anti-Christian and anti-religious, specifically admonishing their fans to “believe in nothing”. For awhile I thought I could continue to listen to the music seperated from the lyrics, but this is a fool’s errand. The negative emotional state that the music drives you to prepares you for the intellectual assault of the lyrics, and so it is impossible to take one or the other, since both lead you away from the quiet place where God can be found.

Well, I like those bands that are very subtle Christian bands. The ones that the lyrics are pretty good, but once you find out they are a Christian group thier lyrics are like “BAM” awesome.

For example, heavy rock group I just heard on the radio.

Flyleaf.

I looked em up, found out they were Christian, and now I love thier CD. Thier single was kinda weird sounding with the lyrics, but once you know they are Christian it makes sense.

Flyleaf - I’m so sick.

"I will break into your thoughts
With what’s written on my heart
I will break, break

I’m so sick, infected with
Where I live
Let me live without this
Empty bliss, selfishness
I’m so sick
I’m so sick

If you want more of this
We can push out, sell out, die out
So you’ll shut up
And stay sleeping
With my screaming in your itching ears

I’m so sick, infected with
Where I live
Let me live without this
Empty bliss, selfishness
I’m so sick
I’m so sick"

Sing it loud and proud girl, I am sick of this earth sometimes too. I am ready to get home.

What’s the deal with Carmina Burana? Is this bad to listen to? I recently downloaded “O Fortuna” from iTunes because I like the sound of it, having heard it (or imitations of it) in several movie trailers, and I am a big film music fan. They also play it at the start of sporting events. Your mention of it has made me nervous and I’m wondering if it’s something I ought to delete from my iPod. Thanks! :o
