nto sure if I spelled the title right, sorry.
has anyone seen this film? is it racy? it sounds like it might be, but someone at work said it wasn’t a sexual film. I’m curious about it because a lot of the teenagers at work are going out to see it. I want to know what I’m talking about, but I never go to the theater anymore. any (name removed by moderator)ut?

Iam not going to bother watching it. for me, its not worth the money or the time.

I saw it and really liked it. It has one or two mostly implied sex scenes. It doesn’t have any nudity though.
I’m not sure if you know this, but a Geisha is not a prostitute. A Geisha is an artisan.

I always thought they were prostitutes. Thanks for the information.

What is their art?

Scott Waddell:
I like Bowman’s review of it jamesbowman.net/reviewDetail.asp?pubID=1672 who says just enough the truth slips past the Hollywood cultural smog-factory to make it worth seeing.

Scott
Mr. Bowman’s review is interesting, considering he feels compelled to mention how feminists would respond to it if it weren’t set in another time and place. Frankly, I don’t care what they might say or think about anything.

He compares it to the newest film version of Pride and Prejudice, which I have not seen and don’t intend to see. The BBC version with Colin Firth could never hope to live up to it. He could have mentioned Arwen in Lord of the Rings for she too hangs unto the hope of her heart and is rewarded for it at the end.

The secret is, we are all holding onto the hope of our hearts who are awaiting the return of Christ or meeting him at our deaths, which is truly a universal hope of a bright future of utter happiness that everyone longs for.

It’s a pity he has no sense of that hope which would properly place all such romantic stories, especially fairy tales like Snow White and Cinderella, etc. into their true context.

this explains the Geisha a bit more. My husband also had the same misconception. He didn’t want to see the movie because he says it glorifies prostitution. I tried to explain but he didn’t believe me. He is out of the country, but when he gets home I will have to show him some information to back up my claim. He travels the world and knows alot about how to fit in with modern cultures, but I usually know a little more about cultural traditions.

lets not forget while they may be artisans part of their job is to entertain men:)
"Literally, “art person”; female performers who specialize in entertaining and providing companionship to men at dinner parties and similar venues"

I haven’t seen the movie yet (though I plan to) but I did read the book and it is very interesting.

This is utterly gorgeous, Della. What a lovely interpretation of all longing.

While Geisha’s aren’t defined as prostitutes, there are definitely instances of prostitution. According to the book, there are men who pay large sums of money to take the geisha’s virginity. Also, the geisha will have sex with their “danna” - a male patron who supports them financially. The only parallel I can think of for a danna is a sugar daddy. From a distance, it may not appear to be protitution, however, all the same nuances are there.

I not so sure he is completely devoid of that sense. At least not from one rather short review. His reviews do take the more polemical/political take that may not be everyone’s cup of tea I’ll grant.

I read it many years ago, but I don’t want to see it. I am boycotting Hollywood except when they do good films that we can be proud to watch. I figure that I have the right to do that and the responsibility. Money talks louder when it comes to Hollywood.

The book was OK, but movies are never as good anyway. This is my opinion.

I saw it in French (I don’t speak French) last weekend. I can grasp the basic plot, but I might have missed some parts. I enjoyed it for the most part, but do have to say it is the only movie to ever make World War II boring!

Yours in Christ,
Thursday

P.S.
The only english movie playing that night was “Underworld: Evolution,” and I was not that desperate to see something in English.

A geisha is equivalent to a courtesan in Europe and prostitution IS one of their job.

I thought the book was interesting… what a said life a geisha has. The movie wasn’t so hot in my opinion. Not sure I’d call it especially racy though… ok for older teens.
