I just finished watching Tierra de Maria on Netflix and hope to go. Wondering if anyone has been there and their experience.
…
I went there in 1994 with my two teenage sons. As they were not interested they disappeared off to play pool.
Every evening there was a long Service which comprised the Joyful and Sorrowful mysteries, followed by Mass and finally the Glorious mysteries. During the Sorrowful mysteries I had a strong impression of the presence of Our Lady. I felt as if I had been briefly transported into Heaven!.
The church was packed to overflowing and many people were outside following along by the external loudspeakers.
I found Medugorje to be a very prayerful place - people walking along toward the hill of Apparitions or the Kriejvak Hill (Hill of the Cross) praying the Rosary.
The accomodation is probably m ore updated now then when I was there. We had some issues with no water in the taps afte a very heavy rainfall and difficulty with phone communication and sometimes making oneself understood . All modernised now I supose.
It was September and we didn’t need alarm clcks to wake up as the cock -a doodle- doos woke us up at the crack of dawn. I was rather alarmed by the hornets which got into our accomodation. They woud shoot across the room , crash into the wall, pick themselves up and then shoot across in the other direction , and bash into the wall again.
The people who live there were very hospitable and prepared good breakfasts and evening meals.
A taxi driver took us on a memorabe visit to Mostar (15 miles or kms away ) He told us that he had been in the police or army and he showed us a scar of a long wound on his arm, which was why he had to retire and became a taxi driver for visitors. He gave us the grand tour of Mostar which had been badly damaged by the recen war. We saw buildings with massive holes blown out of them, we saw the remains of a Church which had no roof and crumbling walls, (war damaged) we saw the local town parks which had been turned into graveyards. Apparently Medugorje had remained unscathed during this ferocious war.
As I remember my visit there I would describe Medugorje as a place full of life and activity and piety . Well worth a visit
