I am trying to find out about a “Classic Novel” called THE POWER OF ONE by Bryce Courtenay. This will be given to my 10th grade daughter who attends a Catholic high school to read for her World Lit. class very soon. I have been advised to read it by another concerned mother whose daughter had to read it last year for this class. She took issue with her daughter’s teacher and the principle of the school (who happens to be a priest). This mother was concerned because of the explictedness of this boy “coming to age” in a very difficult time and culture. There are some very good lessons to be learned I would imagine, but I’m not sure if it would be at the expense of our children’s innocence. Now I’ve only read a couple chapters of this book so far, and I was wondering if any of you parents (or students) have had the occassion to read this book. And if you think it’s appriopiate for 15-16 year olds to be reading for any class…?? I don’t want to jump the gun, but I’m willing to bring it up again to the administration…
Thanks for any (name removed by moderator)ut you may have!
God Bless,
Paula

Is that the book about the white boy growing up in South Africa during apartheid? If so, I believe there is also a movie adapted from the book.

Yep that’s the book. I read it on my own. The book has some interesting parts. But overall it’s about how the Afrikkaners are still angry with the British for taking over South Africa and the strugles with this young kid, through adulthood as he is stuck in a school of Afrikanners, and then with apartheid.

So in your opinion
do you think it’s an appropriate read for Sophomores in High school?
Thanks
Paula
