An interesting perspective. I agree we shouldn’t bury our heads in the sand regarding the scandals in the Church, but I feel very uncomfortable and defensive when I see her painted unmitigated black in movies or books. You’re saying this movie doesn’t do this?
I think it could be viewed either way. It’s certainly critical of the church and nuns. However, I found Philomena’s enduring faith and forgiveness inspiring. Her faith to me outweighed the negative cast the movie gave to the church. I don’t know if everyone would though. For me, I’m in the process of RCIA, and I found the message of enduring faith spoke to me. I know the church has a lot of bad history, so the story of someone who held onto their faith despite experiencing it, was inspiring to me.

That said, for others, it may be that the critical tone is louder than the message of faith. We all have a different lens in which we view movies, based on our own personal experiences.

I saw this movie recently and I thought it was a good movie. As for bashing the Catholic Church, I don’t think that’s what it did. It did tell the truth about some bad times in Irish Catholic history. I don’t think we should gloss over when terrible things are done by nuns or priests. It was amazing to me that Philomena in the movie could have such a strong spirituality to forgive the nuns that tormented her and subsequently withheld information that her son as an adult had tried to find her when she had gone to them repeatedly and was told they had no information as to what happened to him or where he was. Even the real Philomena said the movie is not about bashing the Church - it’s just her story about what happened and how she tried to find her son.

Normally, I love Bill Donahue. I read his review and I don’t know why, but I found it a bit over the top.
