I think it could be viewed either way. It’s certainly critical of the church and nuns. However, I found Philomena’s enduring faith and forgiveness inspiring. Her faith to me outweighed the negative cast the movie gave to the church. I don’t know if everyone would though. For me, I’m in the process of RCIA, and I found the message of enduring faith spoke to me. I know the church has a lot of bad history, so the story of someone who held onto their faith despite experiencing it, was inspiring to me.An interesting perspective. I agree we shouldn’t bury our heads in the sand regarding the scandals in the Church, but I feel very uncomfortable and defensive when I see her painted unmitigated black in movies or books. You’re saying this movie doesn’t do this?
That said, for others, it may be that the critical tone is louder than the message of faith. We all have a different lens in which we view movies, based on our own personal experiences.
