Has anyone in here seen the movie Spotlight? I haven’t personally seen it but I’ve heard it bashes Catholicism. Also, it won best picture, which shows what Hollywood thinks of us.

Relying on what you heard about something can lead you astray. I saw the movie and thought it was excellent, a real demonstration of the need for a strong press. It told a true story about how the Boston Globe brought to light the cover-ups of sexual abuse by the Church. The emphasis of the movie is in the reporters and how they tracked down the story; it’s not primarily about the Church.

I didn’t see it because when a true event is involved, I prefer documentaries over whatever Hollywood comes up with, even if it wins Oscars, and also, these Church scandals were old news to me - because of my work, I’ve been following them for a very long time.

Having said that, I think for people who were less aware of the situation, it may have been an eye-opener. One cannot call it “bashing” when it is reasonably true to the facts of what happened. The sexual abuse cover-ups were not the Church’s finest hour.

I also think if you are going to start a discussion about a film, book, play, etc., unless your question is whether it is family-friendly to watch, read etc., you should really read or watch it yourself, not just solicit opinions based on what you read.

I only saw 1 movie this year and I don’t have much perspective on when I’ll see the next one.

I thought it was a pretty good movie. We need to expose all clergy and laymen who participate in, or even turn a blind eye to, child abuse of any kind. That’s what the movie was about.

I saw it… I don’t think it was particularly anti-Catholic. No more than the truth of the cases involved were.
