It is really getting more difficult to attend the NO’s and it seems that perhaps that it would be worth trying to gather support from other traditional catholics to see what could be done to bring a TLM to the local Church here. It seems that one never knows what to expect anymore regarding what will happen at a NO Mass. There are “nuances” every week, that move more attention away from the altar. Help!

I guess the best way to go about getting the indult is to have the group write a letter to your ordinary explaining why you all are attracted to the rite and why you feel it will enrich your faith and the spiritual lives of those in your parish. Don’t, under any circumstances, give your ordinary the impression that you are “running away” from the Novus Ordo.

Support from your pastor will be critical, too. For example, my parish priest does not feel comfortable celebrating the Tridentine Mass, but he has generously arranged for and pays for one of his confrères to drive an hour and a half every other Sunday to our parish. Perhaps you could suggest such an arrangement to him.

Get as many people from the parish involved as you can. Talk to the parish council, the liturgy board, etc. Assure them that you are all willing to submit to the legitimate authority they have in governing parish affairs. The Knights of Columbus may be an excellent group to get on board, too. Most of the Knights I’ve met are knowledgeable, orthodox men who would love to have an indult Mass available.

you know…I have nothing against TLM; in fact, I was planning to attend one.

However, I’ve read posts like this one:

it really upsets me and I don’t feel like I will attend TLM soon. I simply don’t want to let this kind of people to think that TLM is all we should have.

Thank you CatholicNerd for the helpful advice. As Water has unfortunately deduced that TLM people think this (the TLM) is all that should be available. The TLM should be as available as the NO, I hope in the future. I am not saying TLM should be the only Mass available. I agree with several posters that once you attend the TLM and begin to understand it that it will evangelize itself. One knows holiness when it is encountered- deep in our hearts we recognize this- whether we choose to foster it is another issue.

If one has never attended a TLM it is difficult to comprehend what we are talking about.

Bringing a TLM to an area should not be considered a threat but a sign of hope and restoration- for all Catholics.

Has anyone seen the arrival of a TLM in their area recently??

Unfortunately the situation where you most need a TLM, when the NO Mass is quite obviously not working, is also the situation where it is most dangerous for the Church. The problem is that you are deliberately setting up a rival rite.

What I would suggest is setting up some sort of club designed to attract Traditional Catholics. It could be centred around Latin and the liturgy, or it could be a more active group, like an anti-abortion protest or a camapign for real education. Then do liturgical activities as a natural part of the group’s activities. Then ask for a weekday Mass from a sympathetic priest and note parenthetically to the bishop that you would prefer the Latin rite. However if he refuses don’t make a big issue of it, just make sure that the NO celebration is worthy.

Then try a Mass on a Holy Day of Obligation which most Catholics miss anyway. Then a Sunday Mass, but as a one off, not a regular thing. Again, if the bishop won’t allow a Traditional Mass, don’t kick up a fuss. Close in that way. Also, try to be charitable to NO people, especially priests. Only a very few people like constant criticism, and we are on the same side.

Well in fariness that “Mass” wasn’t an NO and from what I can tell it’s not a real Mass at all…

I say still go and see what all the fuss is about yourself.

I agree. That is putting it lightly, but yes attention has moved away from the altar. I have tried for years to bring the TLM to a local parish, I have been sidetracked and roadblocked.

Keep going man! Keep working on it and NEVER EVER STOP!

We are doing exactly what you are asking about. Our first step was to affiliate with Una Voce. We then started with a small group of about 8-10 people. The first meetings of our group were focused on establishing an organization and setting up acheivable goals. Examp; starting altar boy instruction, a choir.

Una Voce provided us with a link on their website and pretty soon we began getting inquiries asking how they could help or get involved.

We are now getting ready to hold our second quarterly potluck where we invite all interested parties to come and see what we are doing.

We have produced a powerpoint presentation to take to our Archbishop whenever he lets us come up. (which so far has been a “no response”). Altar boy training is well underway, the choir is forming and practicing, and the acquisition committee has picked up vestments and altar hardware so that we are almost ready to host a TLM. Found several sympathetic priests that may be willing to help us out if we can get permission.

Our committee meets monthly at someones home. Next month we will be applying for our state non-profit status. Then we can begin to search for a church that is for sale in earnest.

Do I think the Archbishop will let us have a Mass? No; not on our first try. But as the Scriptures say about the persistant woman who kept after the King. Eventually it will happen.

We openly support our NO parishes with the understanding that when we can have the TLM, that is where we will go. So far no one has spoken openly against us. That may also change, but for now it pedal to the metal.

Wow, that’s wonderful! Out here in Eastern Washington we don’t hear too much about the goings-on on the West Side. I’ll keep you all in my prayers.
